Possibly Clive Own's best film
Set in a fictional multi-culti empire, fusing together medieval European architecture with a Japanese feudal system and the warrior way of bushido. Last Knights is inspired by the true story of the renowned 47 Ronin of 1701, who having failed to fulfil their duty to protect their master, become ronin (masterless Samurai) as all lands and titles of their once respected house are stripped by the Shogun and given to the rival house responsible for their demise. In defiance of the Shogun, and therefore facing certain death, they secretly conspire to sacrifice themselves in order to avenge their fallen master, and restore the name and honour of their house, by carrying out an audacious attack against their rival's fortress against all odds. It's an enjoyable film, the costumes are well made (again a Japanese/western fusion), the medieval scenery, a mixture of real cathedrals and CGI settings, is realistic and sets the mood as the story unfolds.

Brilliant and bold
It’s not boring at all, it had a story that had to build up before being executed...literally. This is not just mindless violence, with swords clashing and sparking against each other for nothing. I agree, it could have been better, it isn’t on the epic scale of Troy, kingdom of Heaven, those were films on a massive scale that are hard to match. This is still a good film with some very good fight scenes and the actors did not appear to me to be just collecting a pay cheque. Come on...we are talking about seasoned actors like Morgan Freeman, whom I wished was in it longer...Clive Owen, an actor that gives his best in his films as he is a total professional. I can’t complain about any of the acting at all. Not every film in this genre can have a cast of thousands of extras. This film was clever and entertaining. There are too many sword and sandal films that are so mediocre that they are not worthy for viewing. Last Knights has put some long overdue respect and much needed entertainment back into the game.

Good, but could have been better - worth watching, though
Quite good fun, but not one of my favourite films of this type. I liked the overall concept of bringing together people from all races and creeds (hence the somewhat varied origin of the cast members), but some of the dialogue was a bit stilted and unnatural; this may have been because the director was trying to create a medieval feel, but it just sounded a bit false to me at times. Morgan Freeman was as smooth as ever but Clive Owen and Cliff Curtis didn't seem comfortable with some of the lines they were expected to deliver. And some of the actors, who obviously didn't speak fluent English, struggled with some of the lines and were almost incoherent at times. But that didn't actually bother me as it seemed to fit with the all races/all creeds aspect of the story - if this coming together had happened relatively recently then the disparities in language would still be apparent. But, visually, this film is very enjoyable to watch, with sweeping landscapes and detailed townscapes, and the well choreographed fight sequences were very good too. The storyline was entertaining, if a little predictable, but I would have liked to have seen one or two plot twists to keep us guessing more about the outcome - the villainous Gezza Mott (played by the excellent Aksel Hennie) surely had more evil tricks up his sleeve; he just seemed to give up very easily towards the end, which was something of a let down for me.It's an entertaining film, and well worth watching, but I think it could have been better.

Predictable and Tame
Some decent performances but overall, just a bit of a dreary slog. Considering the key plot element is loyalty and passion there was resounding feeling that none of main protagonists gave a monkey's.The villain at least provides a nasty bastard to unilaterally despise but his demise (not a spoiler- entirely predictable) seems somewhat lacklustre. And then there is the elephant in the room: Morgan Freeman's facial hair. What on Earth is going on there? I am genuinely conflicted as to whether it is the best or worst aspect of the film. All in all and pretty poor showing from an excellent cast.
