THE ULTIMATE SMALL FACES COMPILATION - 3 DISCS CD
The band I loved so much in the 60's. From Their first roaring single to the sublime Vinyl "OGDEN'S..." still in my collection in good condition. Surely one of the great almost forgotten albums (was it before "Tommy" ? I really ought to know and should have looked it up!!!) Anyway this collection really must stand as one of the true "great" compilations. From the mono to the aforementioned "Ogden's" and beyond, Marriott Lane, McGlagan and Jones were one of THE exciting, innovative bands of the period and here you have a superb collection, including a bit of Humble Pie. The sound quality is excellent,,,BUT ...The actual presentation of the discs is awful. A very slim cardboard case making retrieving the discs difficult, and. worse...the track listing is impossible to read for discs 1 and 2 and there is NO info at all about the band - recording details, dates etc. Two poor photos and that's it. I can't take away a star as the actual songs (they are the important part) are well reproduced and with 54 tracks you really can't go wrong! (Ron and Woody are great but the original still holds a special place in my, and any lovers of great rock...hearts. Buy this one, you won't regret it

Excellent three CD compilation featuring the best of The Small Faces and Humble Pie
If you're looking for the best way to start listening to The Small Faces, you can't go wrong with this three CD compilation featuring all of their hits and choice moments, along with tracks from Humble Pie, Steve Marriott's "supergroup" featuring Peter Frampton. This is an excellent value collection with all original versions of the songs and manages to collect together their Decca singles as well as material from their Immediate years, making it a more cohesive collection than many others on the market and, at the price, is a stone cold bargain.I have noted that there isn't a track listing on Amazon at the moment, so, if you were thinking of buying it but wanted to know what was on it first, here's what it contains:Disc 1: 1. Itchycoo Park 2. Lazy Sunday 3. All Or Nothing 4. My Mind's Eye 5. Sha La La La Lee 6. Get Yourself Together 7. Things Are Going To Get Better 8. Long Agos And Worlds Apart 9. Green Circles 10. The Universal 11. Son Of A Baker 12. Just Passing 13. Feeling Lonely 14. Up The Wooden Hills To Bedfordshire 15. Mad John 16. If I Were A Carpenter (live) 17. Every Little Bit Hurts (live) 18. Natural Born BugieDisc 2: 1. Watch'cha Gonna Do About It 2. Here Comes The Nice 3. Afterglow Of Your Love 4. Hey Girl 5. My Way Of Giving 6. Become Like You 7. Wide Eyes Girl On The Wall 8. Growing Closer 9. I Feel Much Better 10. Talk To You 11. The Autumn Stone 12. Wrist Job 13. Eddie's Dreaming 14. Heartbeat 15. Every Mother's Son 16. (Tell Me) Have You Ever Seen Me 17. HappyDaysToyTown 18. Donkey Ride, A Penny A GlassDisc 3: 1. Tin Soldier 2. I'm Only Dreaming 3. I Can't Make It 4. Rene 5. Show Me The Way 6. Rollin' Over 7. Wham Bam Thank You Mam 8. Only You Can See 9. Something I Want To Tell You 10. The Sad Bag Of Shaky Jake 11. Red Balloon 12. Happiness Stan 13. Colibosher 14. Happy Boys Happy 15. The Journey 16. All Our Yesterdays 17. Call It Something Nice 18. Cold LadyWhilst it is probably best to listen to an album such as Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake to fully appreciate the genius of The Small Faces, this compilation really is an excellent place to dip your toe into their work or, alternatively, if you just wanted a singular "best of" and were happy with nothing more then this really will do the job too. For the amount of quality music you get for the money, you really can't go wrong.

This is a 2cd overview of the Small Faces I should have went for 1 disc collection
I've been wanting to get into the Small Faces for a while now as I'm running out of '60s and early '70s band's to get into. I got this 2cd collection which has far too many tracks from their first unknown releases to their last work which isn't too good. I should have went for a 1 cd overview of their work. They made some great tracks. All or Nothing, Tin Soldier, Son of a Baker, Here Comes The Nice, Itchycoo Park, Lazy Sunday are their more famous songs. They recorded Watcha Gonna Do About It which will be known to Sex Pistols fans as they also done a rough (what else) version.Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane were both great additions to the music world. They were both original songwriter's. The Small Faces, along with the Who and The Kinks were adopted by the Mods of '60s England. Also the Small Faces merged into The Faces with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood.

Aptly named
If you are as old as I am (born 1948), you will remember some of their singles even if you don't remember the Small Faces name. This is a very representative collection of a top group of the top 60's. With 50 tracks for less than £10 it is a bargain. My experience is that collection issues are usually unrepresentative of the the work of the artists involved. That is not the case here, probably because the Small Faces was a relatively short-lived group issuing 4 albums and about 15 singles in the period 1966 to 1968 (excluding the "reformed" group's 2 albums in 1977 and 1978). Steve Marriott as lead singer and guitarist was the mainstay of the group. They were best known for their singles and their most well-known album is (probably) Ogdens Nut Gone Flake. When this was originally issued it came in an oversize tobacco tin (large enough for the 12" vinyl). I never owned this at the time, but in the last few years was put this on my wish list for Christmas and received a CD as a present - see my separate review of that. The compiler's of the Ultimate Collection for the Small Faces did not have a huge collection of tracks from which to make their selection, so it was probably more a case of choosing what NOT to include. The result is very good. The singles (which were repeated on albums anyway) are included, together with album tracks including the best parts of Ogdens Nut Gone Flake (without Mr. Unwin, and with good equalisation).

Considering these are the precursor to Humble Pie
They sound to ‘bubblegum’ to me at this time
