For someone with a programming background, I found this intro to Python very informative and useful. The author does a good job of providing just enough detail so that the reader will understand the concepts without confusing the reader or getting too technical. The illustrations are also helpful in getting the message across. Maybe the best intro on programming book I've read in a long time.

Great book. While there are many books that provide an intro to Python, few (any?) do such a good job of taking a 'newbie' from setting up your system in order to run Python (instructions for users on Windows, Mac and Linux) and move all the way to sophisticated coding concepts that will make you more productive in Python. Throughout, the author has taken great care to explain all concepts and lay the groundwork for the next steps in learning. My interest in Python was sparked by the growing use of CircuitPython in electronic projects. The author engaged with the community (incl me) to fine-tune the presentation so I was able to 'read' the books drafts and see it become truly great. This book gave me a solid understanding of Python using its step-wise, example-driven text and outstanding clarity. Recommended for any reader who wants THE introductory book to Python.

I have been a developer since the 70’s and program in languages from COBOL, FORTRAN, C/C++ and Java. I didn’t need all the whole chapter on what a variable was. This book didn’t do that. I needed something I could cover quickly and do Python. I will be covering his other books because explanations were clear, concise and fun. Highly recommend.

I am on a path to learn python 3 for my job. After reading Head First to Python which is a great book, I was able to do some scripting with Linux. However, I don't have intimate knowledge about programming or why the language syntax is designed. This books provide the exact thing that I looks for - the next step from beginner (those who already writes 1000 line of code like myself) to intermediate level. Next step, I will take a look into Fluent Python book to see what is the hype about it.

I have been dabbling with python for about 18 months. A script at work to automate something, a web scraper to get some data, an api call to get data out of something...All of my learning has been self taught, just solving for the problem at hand. While I am only 100 pages in, this book has revealed a lot of the 'why' and 'how' underneath the code I have been using this whole time.I imagine it would be a boring read for a MS in compsci, for me it has been eye opening, and has helped me write better code.Highly recommended for hobby/mid-level/self-taught pythonistas like myself.

What's so incredible about this book is how well the author covers complex topics through the artful use of technical illustrations. He's truly embraced the idea that a picture is worth a thousand words, but in doing so hasn't dumbed down the content at all. The author's coverage of the foundations of classes, subclasses, and functions is really well done, and I enjoyed the subtleties that he exposed on those topics.If I could register a complaint about this book is that it wasn't available when I was first learning Python back in 2005!

Excellent overview of Python basics and syntax. This book is also well tailored to exprienced programmers (like me), who want to get the idea, but don't need a basic explanation of what programming is.I just wish there were a section on regular expressions. Otherwise, it's a fine intro to the language.

Got me well on my way with Python. Generally clear explanations. Usually good examples. At times, the examples also contained aspects of Python not yet explained. All in all, a very good book. A fair balance of the underworkings of Python, and practical application.

This book is very boring, in style and presentation. For time starved people, I thought it was going to offer a "quick" way into the intriguing and magical world of Python for non-programmers (the "illustrations" are laughable... Like really bad PowerPoints!) Alas not, it's all fairly obvious and understandable - just not linked together/joined up in a way that is enlightening (the single example of code at the end of the book is so uninteresting I would never dream of typing it out to see what it does - and there are no screenshots of working code etc).Too be honest, I would avoid this book and stick with the Python.org help docs

This book is one of the most easy and pleasent to read i ever had. Fundamentals topics are covered and the images make all of them look obvious. Great book

Good book for a beginner.

The best way to learn anything is through illustrations: I use this in my teaching at the local College.I had gone through several python books: although I am fluent in Pascal, C and C++, I thought it would be a good idea to catch up on this new kid in town: Python.I was excited when I saw this "Illustrated" tutorial on Python in Amazon. I was disappointed when I read this.The so-called illustrations are just block diagrams and do NOT add to or enrich the explanation in the text. Additionally, the graphics are of low quality gray scale; the small print in the low resolution block diagrams are poorly printed and are hardly visibleThere are a few print errors in the book but I was willing to let that pass: but I am wondering if there were any technical errors in the sample code provided.The tutorial is not bad but it is presented in a boring style: I admit the book was not meant for an somewhat experienced coder. (I no longer make a living by coding: it has now become a hobby.) There is a vast number of free tutorials on the web and those would be a better choice that this book. Returning it today.PS: I still think C is the king of programming languages.
