Still a good head after 40 years or so in production
Still a good head after 40 years or so in production! These were flavour-of-the-month back in the late 70's & early 80's until the ubiquitous Pinstripe became the must-have head and all but exterminated all other types. However, the CS head survived in the 80's mainly because it became a favourite with rock drummers using metal snare drums. Steel snare drums can be loud but also can be "ringy" or difficult to control; therefore the extra thickness of the black dot in the centre helped in that department, but also increased durability as well. The single-ply clear film allows plenty of brightness and response, but the centre dot removes/subdues some of the high overtones generated by the steel shell - (unlike twin-ply heads (eg Pinstripe) which can kill the attack sound of the stick hitting the head & just leave the snare sound to be heard). I recently got a deep steel snare drum and finding it way too bright & lively for most gigs with the standard Ambassador head,... tried some different heads on it... all to no avail really.. not quite right. Then I recalled I had put a CS on an aluminium drum I had a few years ago which worked a treat, so trusting on its history and my previous experience I decided to buy this one. Well? - yes, works a treat! One added bonus of it being clear is that I can see the dampener fitted to the drum, and make small adjustments to get the sound just right. (unlike with coated heads) . This version (clear) is not for you if you use brushes or hotrods a lot - you will need a coated head and probably not a CS either, but for metal snare drums used in a rock/pop setting, yes, very good!

GREAT HEAD!
I had read reveiws saying this wasn't great for playing more aggressive types of rock druming but I bought it anyway one for the fact its a remo head and the other was the low price, and I'm glad I did! I play Alternative/punk - metal music and this head gives me the exact sound i need! :)

perfect fit
I ordered this 8 inch along with a 6 inch and 10 inch head to replace the three CB700 roto tom heads I was using. Each came in its own genuine Remo box. At first I was questioning whether roto tom and regular drum heads were different in some way...maybe because of a size difference between the head rim and the roto tom frame...or maybe because of the extended tightening. But, they fit perfectly and tightened and tuned well. As usual, superb Remo quality. To start, make sure the new heads are centered in the roto tom frames and tighten all the lugs evenly to snug with your fingers. Then don't use the lugs anymore for tension but instead, turn the roto tom frame. Do not tighten them too much at first. Let the heads stretch and get used to their new environment. You will hear the sound they make as you turn the frame and as they stretch. When you hear the first sounds, that is tight enough for now. Give them a half hour to adjust then tighten a little more. Repeat the process little by little after the initial tightening until you get the pitch you want to hear. Be patient. These heads have a much fuller sound than the CB700's and also a softer bounce. The set of three with the black control dots look awesome and sound great.
