The ants are happy and so is my child.

The media could not be loaded.  Bought this for my 7 year old son, but I think I enjoy it more than him! We’ve only had this for 2 days and I can probably stay entertained all day just watching the ants work. This does not come with sand or ants so I ordered all 3 items at the same time from Amazon. The ant farm and sand were delivered together, and the ants arrived the next day. I got the ants from Nature Gifts because I didn’t want to wait to use the coupon that comes with the ant farm. That’s also an extra cost. I got the My Little Sandbox/Sandbox Critters Play Set sand that was suggested by Amazon. One pack is more than enough to fill the farm. When filling the farm with sand you want to make sure you fill it as full as possible because when you add the water, it’ll compact the sand and leave more space at the top. The western harvester ants were a doozy to put in the farm. We thought they were chilled enough to be still and slip right into the opening, but as soon as they hit our home made paper funnel, they scrambled to get out. They tricked us! My husband, son and I were frantically collecting them off the table and floor. I got stung once, and we lost a few ants in the battle, but thankfully most survived. In less than 24 hours they started tunneling through the sand. We added 2 pieces of honey granola grains and they immediately gravitated to them. I hope the ants will last. I’ll try to update this review if we’re successful…or not.June 11, 2021 update. We’ve had this about 2 weeks now and the ants are dying. We’re following the instructions that came with the farm, so it’s a little sad. We might still get new ants and try again. They really are interesting to watch. October 11, 2021 update: The last harvester ant finally gave up. We enjoyed watching the colony for a little over 4 months. None escaped, as long as you keep their mounds from reaching the very top. Overall this is a good ant farm.

This ant farm is well-designed and much easier to use than many others on the market. Instructions for pre-filling the farm with soil and moisture are included and easy to follow. It is easy to drop ants and pupae into the top section and then sit back and watch the ants excavate their tunnels and create their new home over the following weeks. You obviously need to first find out what food source your particular ant species likes and provide it on a regular basis.
