The obvious question nobody mentions. Can use use this stand with your guitar plugged in? (I.e., a cable coming out of the bottom)

The obvious answer is...it depends on where the female jack is on your guitar and what type of male plug you're using. So for some guitars (many?) it's not an issue. I have no problem with either of the four guitars I typically use on my stands (Les Paul, Strat, Tele, 335) but that's no guarantee that you won't.

Will this work with a Steinberger headless bass?

bought this for a spare, in case didn't have one, does not work as well with my fender as my SG, i am not familiar with your bass, and i don't use it at all times, i like the hanging stands the best, but this one folds up and fits in the back of my amp, like i said as a spare.

Is this stand safe for new nitrocellulose finished guitars? I’ve heard that it must be a year old before it’s safe to sit on even a Hercules stand.

I have used it with the two Ovation Acoustics and Fender Tele when I'm traveling. It's fine. Hercules is a wonderful brand. I only use the Mic stands, but if I'm getting ready to buy a foldable tri stand for performing. If I'm only going to play 1 guitar, I'll pack this is my bag. It's sturdy and functions well, but I don't like people too close when I'm using it. Accidents could happen.
