I love the Teach Yourself books series and this one on mathematics is simply brilliant with these step by steps in each of the subjects in mathematics. The book is easy to use and read. Anyone who is scared of mathematics I strongly recommend reading this book to get your confidence once again in that subject.Best wishes Sean

Clear treatment of maths as I understood it up to 1953 (for what is now called GCSE level. When my elder son prepared for his GCSE maths in 1976, with me alongside some of the time, his work included modern, and new-to-me notations, such as vectors. Interestingly, this book has no content that is different to my maths of the early 50's. More pertinently, my lifetime of design, development and management in mechanical engineering has required nothing more than this book's treatment of arithmetic, powers & roots, notations, algebra, trigonometry & statistics (with the exception of distributions). Whilst I studied calculus for HNC Mech Eng and found it illuminating, I have never had cause to apply it>

I bought this great book in preperation for an Open University Course . I needed to refresh my maths and this seemed an ideal start point . As someone who hated maths at school and in fact was frightened of it , this is simple to follow and the explanations make the concepts easy to grasp . The exercises really help get you to understand and are actually fun to do ! . I have really enjoyed the book and working through the exercises , in fact I have bought the Algebra and Statistics books to carry on my revision !

A good, basic book, whether used as an introduction or as a revision guide. The book is well-indexed and contains many useful hints and examples to help understand the subjects. Well worth the money!

This is a very old school book that teaches math that used to be in schools in the 19 50's - 1990's. But it is math non the less. I was looking to teach myself and this book was a bit too boring for me.

Arrived quickly. Brought it along to work and am working my way through between calls. Good quality book, same size as a novel so it isn't like the big math books you get in school, which makes it handy to travel with. There are 390 pages with 24 chapters. Starts you off with the basic place value (units, tens, hundreds etc) and then onto arithmetic. I've never been good with maths, so hopeful this helps since I haven't done any since I stopped taking it in highschool about 7 years ago. I'll update this review once I'm much further into the book.

I wanted a book to teach me the maths basics. At first I thought it was a bit too basic but within a few chapters it got to a level I was looking for. It explains the fundamental concepts clearly and presents regular tests to confirm your understanding. These tests are a sensible spread from reasonably easy through to thought provoking questions that ensure you understand the underlying concepts. There is a progression through each chapter that builds on what you have already learned. Altogether this book is a very effective method to learn the fundamentals of mathematics....

This book is brilliant. I tutor secondary school students and after a long break from teaching, this book just covers everything you need to know on a simple and straightforward way with lots of examples to work through. I wish I'd had it when I sat my exams. Highly recommended. I
