Can anyone tell me how heavy this is as I need one to go in checked airline baggage!!
Is this suitable for a Nikon D5300
What length does it extend to, is it adjustable to various heights?
What is the thread on the fitting? Is it 3/8"of 1/4"? Thanks.

Excellent value
I am planning a walking holiday/photography trip to Scotland with my girlfreind and thought about what photography equipment I needed to take. As we would be walking miles I decided that I probably didn't want to have to lug my tripod around as well as all my other kit. Having a 500mm prime lens for taking wildlife/action shots I need a little assistance with holding the camera steady, particularly in less than perfect light as it has a fixed f8 aperature. With all this in mind I selected this monopod as being a suitable peice of kit to carry around all day and steady my long shots. I am pleased to say it was a good choice. The Velbon UP-400 is a good peice of kit. It is light and solid, with good extensions that are not thin and flexible like some monopods can be. As well as meaning it will support a decent sized DSLR with zoom lens, it will also double quite well as a walking pole which quite alot of photographers use them for when the camera is not attached. The rubber foot at the bottom contains a little height adjustment and also has a small metal spike that can be screwed out if you want to use it on soft ground. The length of the monopod is useful, fully extended with camera attached it is too high for me to use and I am 6ft tall so most people will not struggle to get it up to eye level. If I had to criticise this monopod, it would be down to the fact that the screw head does not move, it is totally fixed which means that you have to spin the pole around to attach it to your camera. I will buy a quick release head for this I think as it will solve this problem as well as meaning that I will not have to screw the pole on every time I want to use it. For this end of the price scale I don't think there is a better monopod that I've seen as it does all of what you would want it to without stinging your wallet. Like many of it's competitors you may find yourself buying a screw on ball head or quick release head though to make things easier.

Works well as stick and monopod, and good value
I bought this for a walking holiday in La Palma. It works very well as a walking stick on rough terrain, and also as a monopod for my Canon 1000D and 200mm lens. it is very sturdy due to the D shaped tubular construction, far more rigid than others I have tested, and not too heavy. The simple screw head quickly screws into the camera, no need for quick release mechanism, unless you need to use it for Portrait orientation shots. Setting the length is quick and easy. The screw doesn't get in the way when using it as a stick alone. My only slight niggle is that it is a bit noisy when banging it against rocks when walking, it makes a clacking sound.

" A leg to stand on!"
I am always dubious about buying cheap tripods and mono pods, but I had nothing to fear with the Velbon UP 400 mono pod. I use my dslr for video, fixed to a rig, with microphone and led light. Quite a bulk to support, and I can say the monopod is brilliant. It is very sturdy, which is down to the shape of the shaft. lowest leg is always the thinnest, and that is super rigid also.It comes with a 1/4 inch screw thread on a circular head where you can fit a quick release plate or other type of method for attaching your camera. The clips on the leg sections feel strong, even though they are made of plastic. The operation of these sections is smooth, pulling out and pushing in with ease.I would recommend this monopod for all types of dslrs, even with large lenses as the 'pod is capable of taking the weight of a lot of kit.All in all well worth the money and a well made piece of kit from Velbon

Pretty darned GOOD!
I mean to be honest what are you looking for in a Monopod? Are you sifting through review after review, wondering if the weight capacity will meet you needs? Yeah, I thought so; just like I was then. After flipping between here and Fleabay, I decided that Amazon wins every-time for me. I mean C'MON, their service has to be pretty much second to none, and I am ONE SERIOUS Task-master ... I mean that !Right then .... the bit you've been waiting for :) I've just put a ten pin ball on top at maximum extension and no surprises it stood loud n proud like we boys do first thing in the morning :) If you get my gist? It was a 14lb ball and it held it without any bend at all! Camera wise I just threw my Canon DSLR on with a 24-105 L series and a 430ex flash. Took it with tons of room to spare. The spike is adjustable but truthfully if you're doing Macro like me with a 100mm f2.8 on top you just need it to be firm. Firm it truly is ... I kid you not.Clips feel like really solid, thread screws in tight ( I mean dudes; like WTF is it supposed to do?) No wobble, powder coated finish is DDG (drop dead gorjuice) Slick, not a bad thing to say so if you are into looking for a monopod thingamingyjigebob; look no further .... I cannot for the life of me imagine you could do better! Just saying. Oh me? I'm a retired ex [professional person with more letter after their name than the alphabet ... I mentioned this in case you thought I was a numpty. WHAT MOI???? You got me :)

Just Right
This is a good product. Much more solid and robust than others in the price range. This is not flimsy at all, but strong. It expands really tall (the maximum height is too tall for me to use - I am 5'6"). It packs down nice and light. It will poke out through the top of my small ruck-sack, but a larger ruck-sack would be perfect. You will need to purchase a 'quick release plate' to go with this. A very good product for the price. I am very pleased with it.

Spend more, get better product
I lost by beloved and ancient Velbon monopod. I looked at reviews of those in the $15-20 range, and it seems like there was also something wrong, either in quality or feature."Screw it." Danced with the one that I brought. Solid, pointy tip, and sections clamp tightly. I use it as a walking stick, more substantial than my walking sticks!Worth the difference in cost.
