Not like the old days!
I bought this as a present for my niece as she requested a science kit, and as she loves horrible histories/ science etc and is very intelligent I thought this would be perfect for her.Firstly, the product is not like the science kits I had as a child (proper science kits that included test tubes, petri dishes, miscroscopes etc). This is much more dumbed down. The experiments are very basic 'kitchen' experiments, rather than nurturing the scientist in the child. I am guessing this is a health and safety thing as all science kits these days are like that.Secondly, the first kit that arrived to me was missing parts, (so I highly recommend checking the contents of the box when it arrives). Amazon were quick to sort out this matter, but instead of just sending me the missing parts, I was sent a whole new kit and had to return the the one, which was a bit annoying. Not only that, but when the replacement kit arrived it was in a worse condition than my original! The sand that comes with the kit leaked so there was next to nothing left in the bag, and this replacement box had parts missing too! In the end I just swapped out the parts that I needed to make a complete set and sent the damaged one back with the incorrect/ missing pieces!I feel the product is a waste of time for what you get considering this is a supposed to be a science kit to excite and encourage children to explore the sciences, instead its all too safe and boring! I decided to buy this for my niece anyway as I know she'll love it (it being Horrible Science AND what she has been after for over a year), and it'll let me spend good quality time with her. But having to deal with all the hassle of missing parts etc was really irritating. If anything, buy it in advance so you can deal with any issues that I had to deal with.

Lovely present for a little scientist!
This was bought as a Christmas present for a nearly 8 year old, who really likes to experiment and explore things. She was extremely happy to receive this kit, and started to use it the other day. They said everything went well, though you need a few things to be able to do all of these experiments, they said they were ok with everything as you normally have these in your household anyway like vegetable oil, paper, salt, glass jar, teaspoons, water etc. It is an affordable kit which contains quite a few experiments so kids can be busy for a few days not only one is a bonus too! All in all I'm happy I purchased this as I made our friends' little girl very happy!

Great fun, but dont expect Krakatoa
Had great fun with my 6yr old playing with this. A lot of the experiments are repeatable as well (ie it isn't a 1 time thing), which means he can now do a lot of it himself. As far as an educational tool, it peaked my sons interest, as he wanted to understand how everything worked...perhaps the downside is that as a parent you actually need to know what causes the reaction and why a (for example) volcano erupts!!!Why not 5*? The reactions themselves weren't as 'explosive' or exciting as I'd have hoped, and a lot of it you could do yourself without the kit. However, especially for the price, really good fun, and great for a rainy day
