Sanjuro (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

First,I love this movie from way back. Now,i ordered it with yojimbo which arrived perfectly. But this blu-ray had been submerged or soaked in something for an extended period. Bubbles inside shrinkwrap,oily surface, smells like air freshener. Started return process,promptly received 2nd copy. Same thing. Now i gotta send 2 back. Want the movie,but i guess ill have to buy it elsewhere.

This movie has both great humor and action. Toshiro Mifune is at the top of his game in this follow up to Yojimbo (the Original Man With No Name, a film directly translated to the Clint Eastwood classic A Fistful of Dollars). This time, the Man with No Name comes across nine hapless samurai who are wrong at every turn, but Mifune’s “Sanjuro” (bodyguard) is there to help them out.With fantastic fights and hilarious encounters, this is a must see movie!! Most highly recommended!!

Even the title is interesting, ichro is the first son and inherits all the property, nichro is the second son and normally helps his older brother manage the property, and sanjuro the third son is hung out to dry. In the movie the title character is wonderfully acted and the mixture of comedy and drama is well done. Sanjuro is very real and plot twists are very good indeed. The head of the village who is saved is a wonderful surprise and last scene is incredible. One of my all time Japanese movie favorates and having spent six years in Japan I have seen a few. Get it.

This movie speaks for itself. It's pure cinematic artistry from Akira Kurusawa himself. This movie is gorgeous. It's the best looking black & White film I have ever seen. The plot is very interesting & quite humorous despite the characters being faced with death at every turn. GREAT cinematography. When you observe what Kurusawa was able to do back in 60's without modern tech, it really puts most modern directors to shame. Toshiro Mifune is an extraordinarily well rounded actor, and this is my favorite roll of his that I've seen so far. Brilliant.

"Sanjuro" may not match its predecessor in sheer virtuosity, but it's actually more fun, thanks to Mifune's comic scenery-chewing, and the innately humorous contrast between the clean, proper youths and their unlikely, unkempt protector. Sanjuro's savvy counsel to the virtuous but impulsive youths ("Things are not always what they seem") gets repeated and borne out through various developments which eventually help restore justice to the land. Bottom-line: In this entry, Mifune himself really warms to "Sanjuro," and as a result, so do we.

Two of my favorite actors Tatsuya Nakadai and Kunie Tanaka are in this. I may be being biased but those two together usually make for a good movie

I love all the works of Akira Kurosawa and his collaboration with Toshiro Mifune. I have always foundthis movie to be fun to watch. The acting is great and their are some funny lines throughout. A mostentertaining film.

Je pense incorrect de vendre en Europe un produit explicitement réservé à l'Amérique du nord !I bought this product which seemed to be "zone free" since no zone restriction was indicated in its presentation on Amazon, but it is indicated on the box, in very small letters: "For Sale in the US and Canada only", and indeed, it is not visible in Europe. Encore un chef d'oeuvre de Kurosawa avec son personnage génial du ronin désabusé et ironique... Génialement interprété par Toshiro Mifune, ce personnage solitaire et errant va venir remettre un peu d'ordre dans un monde courant à sa perte (abus de pouvoir, luttes d'influence, corruption, violences faites aux populations abandonnées, inégalités sociales). Il le fera en faisant s'affronter les forces en présence, en essayant toujours d'en faire le moins possible, même si son art dans le maniement du sabre lui vaut respect et soumission. Ce personnage ironique et solitaire n'est pas sans rappeler "personne" dans les westerns de Sergio Leone... On retrouve ce personnage superbe dans Yojimbo, autre chef d'oeuvre.Les cadres léchés, l'interprétation majeure, la civilisation japonaise à l'effondrement du pouvoir des Shogun et un auteur profondément moral et humaniste vous offriront un réel régal !Merci Wild Side d'avoir ré-edités ces chefs d'oeuvre en HD.
