Boom!
Wow. It might take you twenty minutes to read this book, or two days. The imagery is that captivating, detailed, and evocative, and the story pulled me along as if I had no will of my own.At the same time, the story itself is a moment of realization and - maybe - enlightenment, spread out over some indeterminate number of months. These hundreds of pages, maybe a thousand panels, combine skilled drawing with deep storytelling in the best way. There are some words in this, in fact words take center stage. But little is spoken, and none central to the story.Perhaps this sounds cryptic. Well, I don't like to give spoilers. But, even if I did, the story would still be cryptic and the art would still have narrative strength that I rarely see equaled. I just heard some lectures on fiction writing, and one segment addressed the problem of mixing first- and third-person narrative. Maybe that's tough in textual storytelling, but Chaboute flips between them seamlessly and in ways that advance the exposition well. He also warps time, spending a dozen pages on a minute's action, then spending the same on days or weeks - also seamlessly.I first encountered this remarkable artist in Park Bench , a charming biography - sort of. The subject never actually lived, but still had a wonderful life. That one seemed a bit closed, as if we'd seen it come full circle, or nearly so. This is the opposite: the ending is only one of a million possible beginnings, and we have no idea which one. I promise, whatever I learn this artist had written/drawn/whatever, I'll read.-- wiredweird

Beautiful whole story
Rich storytelling, luscious illustration, cinematic illustration. Wholly satisfying story filled with drama, pathos, intrigue, and an ending motivated by what came before. Highest quality writing, highest pleasure in reading. In my top 100 books.

Captivating & powerful storytelling
I read alot of graphic novels, I don't leave alot of reviews. This book was very well done, written and drawn in a way that wastes nothing, but offers alot. Creative, unique and thought provoking. Looking forward to getting my hands on more of the authors work. Enjoy!

Like a favorite rainy day movie
The story is mostly told visually. And boy is it a treat to look at. The story is enthralling. At times, brutal, other times poetic. I loved the humanity portrayed. I also found it to be a nice book to revisit. Almost like a favorite rainy day movie.

Nice graphic, mediocre story
Lots of nice black and white ink work and some fantastic compositions, but story it to long and not particularly compelling.

Truly a masterpiece , a must read book
Every single panel in this book is truly amazing, the book must be read slowly, there are not many words to read, but the way the artist shows each panel from a different angle and with a different meaning is breath taking and relaxing at same time... The story line is most unpredictable and humane...I will rate it as one of best graphic novels of modern times, most apt in today's pandemic ridden planet ... if you find time do give it a try ....What we have and what we desire both can be fascinating in their own ways ...

Great story, got a used book
I am shocked not a lot of people have read this beautiful graphic novel. The story was 5/5It's a story about 'alone' , a man living by himself in a lighthouse since forever. How he perceives outside world through the limited knowledge he has but the unlimited imagination makes this a beautiful story. The frames and derailed beautifully and the whole experience feels absolutely real! The problem was the book is not available in mint condition on Amazon, I think I got a used version, none the less if the price was lower I wouldn't have returned it.I bought if for 1200 and got a used edition. Hence had to return it.

Relatable to some of us
The circumstances and feelings pictured in this literature are somewhat relatable to one or the other. For one more and for the other less.Anyways its great to see that we are not the only on or are alone with that. Its depressing and relieving/joyfull at the same time to see how the protagonist deals with his circumstances. Though in the end there is light.

Wunderbar

Very Creative
This is a delightful, inspirational book, from the first page to the last, Chuck full of exceptional Sequential Art. Although the book is rather thick, one can read it easily in one sitting, (it's a short little story) so if you are looking for something more substantial, maybe this is not for you
