Is this product necessary for he washers? i have just purchased a top-loading he washer and never needed fragrances previously.

No it is not necessary at all. It’s used to get smells out of clothes. If you never used fragrance before you bought an He washer then you don’t need to unless you want your clothes to smell like fabric softener or you want an odor removed. But no it is not necessary at all.

Can i use this in place of fabric softener? I line dry clothes, will clothes be soft without a dryer?

Downy rinse & refresh is an odor remover and deep cleansing fabric rinse that is safe on all fabrics and gentle on skin. You add this in place of fabric softener. It clarifies your fabrics by removing residual build up caused by detergent and normal fabric softener. I love because it leaves a very clean light scent (and softness), and not overpowering as when closed are washed with detergent and normal fabric softener. Also it elimintes the gunk that sometimes builds up in the fabric softener cup. As for line drying your clothes, I can't really answer that as I live in an apartment building. However, I imagine that it would be fine based on my experience with this product.

How much of this should i use? I do not have a fabric softener dispenser for measurement.

Is this a cruelty free, no animal testing product?

Be aware that all Proctor & Gamble products involve some level of animal testing. Their comment is that "no animal testing is done on the final product." I try to support products that do NOT test any ingredients on animals. I am easily able to do this with cosmetics, household cleaning products (Mrs. Meyers, etc.) and more. That said, I have found it impossible to find laundry products that actually work that do not come from companies that test on animals. I am putting this comment out so that you can make honest decisions about what you buy based on how critical this knowledge is to you. I am not a vegetarian or vegan, so while I try to be supportive, I also want products that work. Honesty is important and I didn't see an honest answer to this question, so I am posting the truth.

Better than fabric softener

Fabric softener adds a layer that traps mildew over time. This product releases odors and trapped mildew. I love the fresh smell it leaves behind. You have to try it on your towels. They will actually dry you off!

Smells amazing – and actually works!I wasn't sure what to expect, but Downy Rinse & Refresh really surprised me in the best way. It completely gets rid of any lingering odors in clothes—especially gym wear and towels—and leaves everything smelling super fresh without being overpowering.It’s easy to use, just pour it in with the rinse cycle, and that’s it. Really does work... Absurdly expensive... Possibly worth it if you need it.

This "Downy Rinse and Refresh" actually did freshen my laundry. It works better than vinegar for removing odors and detergent residue. I had a seemingly unsolvable laundry odor problem. I think it resulted from using too much detergent along with an HE clothes washer that does not use enough water to rinse well. My clean clothes would begin to smell in storage or while wearing them. I previously tried other remedies such as vinegar rinses and even Lysol disinfecting additive. Finally, this Downy Rinse made a significant difference. Downy Rinse is a big improvement. My clothes appear noticeably brighter and cleaner. The recurring malodor is reduced. There are some product downsides though. The Downy is dispensed very late in the last rinse cycle and only briefly reaches fabrics. Running a separate rinse and spin cycle using Downy Rinse might be more effective. Another downside is the product price. Downy Rinse is expensive for everyday use. The very vague directions suggest 1/4 cup per load. That is only 24 loads per 48 oz. bottle. That works out to 54 cents per load (based on $13 for a 48 oz. bottle). That load cost is higher than detergent. Yet, I suppose if you really need a solution to odors then almost any price is worth it. I plan to keep using Downy Rinse indefinitely. I've run through three bottles so far. One more note, the product scent is strong and remains after drying. It doesn't bother me.You may have experienced my same problem. Odorous "clean" laundry seems to be common now. Probably due to HE washers. The odor problem has a name, "rebloom." You can find explanations and tips online. The active ingredient in this Downy Rinse is citric acid. The citric acid breaks down old detergent residue that coated the cloth fibers. That old residue traps dirt and bacteria underneath. Hence the odor that recurs even after washing. This citric acid Downy Rinse solves the problem. Downy Rinse is not just a perfume.
