Yes! I have a model before 1998 - ignore the instructions that come with the remote, and look it up on YouTube. It's SUPER easy - you just push the button on the opener (on the roof of the garage), it blinks, push the remote button, and it's programmed. If you search for "program universal remote old genie" or something to that effect you'll find some good videos.
