Buy It for the Information
It's by Bruce Canfield so you know it's excellent. An excellent book to research many of the variations of these two rifles. Well written with many photos and diagrams. My friend is researching his M1 and we spend a lot of time with this book.

Great reference work!
If you want to know the details of the M1 "Garand" and M1 carbine, this book is outstanding!Well-written, detailed, good photos, and packed with data on the production and historyof these fine rifles. Those who wish to learn what parts are correct for rifles of any maker/production era, plus how to spot fakes and upgrades, will find it here. If you have any collector'sor investor's interest in these rifles, this book can save you far more than its' purchase price, inthe first use alone!

Any of Bruce Canfield's books are worth reading!
Bruce Canfield's books are always worthwhile reading for the interested student of history: he always explains the development and technical details of the firearm under review within its historical context, never slacking in detail yet somehow never getting bogged down in minutiae. If you don't already have _War Baby_ and are interested in the M1 Carbine, this is a worthwhile book; if you already own _WB_ or are planning on getting it and are uninterested in the M1 Garand rifle, you would be better off saving your money & spending it on _War Baby_, which focuses exclusively on the M1 Carbine. I have read _War Baby_ and found the section on the Carbine in Canfield's book to be (understandably) inadequate in comparison, but wholly enjoyable and complete in its own right if not already familiar with the extensive and absolutely thorough coverage provided on the subject by _War Baby_.Any fan of the Garand rifle is well-served by adding this title to his personal library. That said: I really wish that this title was offered as part of a compendium with Bruce Canfield's _Johnson Rifle_, as that other book is rather pricey in comparison; if the two were combined at the present price of his book on the Johnson rifle, it would be a no-brainer to buy it, offering as it would a fairly comprehensive look at the long arms developed and used by the U.S. immediately prior & during World War II. Something the publisher should consider, as I imagine sales of the book on the Johnson rifle are handicapped by it's high price, while this book is not as thorough as others devoted exclusively to their single topical long arm and hence could benefit from the addition of the added material on the Johnson rifle which competed with the Garand for political favor...

A Good Resource
Very good at following the history and progression of the M1 Garand. I love the tables you can use to identify which variant of the rifle you have. When I received the book, it didn't look very big. But, once I started to read it, I was plesantly surprised with the content and descriptions. The only real complaints I would have; would be that blown up pictures of the rifle and carbine be included along with more drawings and pictures. Definitely a good resource for someone interested in the Garand or Carbine.

Straight shooting
This book is a must if you have a M1 or a contemporary version of this rifle. We were pleasantly surprised at the no fluff writing style. It is straight to the point and an easy to use reference. Currently looking at sending a 7.62x51 to 1000 meters and ease of use is important.

Written for collectors
This volume was written by an expert for collectors but it contains a lot of history as well. Even if you casually thumb through it, you should be able to spot an era correct rifle from one cobbled together from a pile of spare parts. I'm not knocking rifles made from spare parts. Many are good shooters, but that's what the are - shooters. Id'e wager that 99% of originals are already owned by collectors and are worth thousands. Many good shooters can be had for, and are worth less, than a thousand bucks. I recommend this book to anyone interested in buying an M1 Garand or Carbine.

Libri monografici argomento militare
