Its 60" cable eliminates crawling around under a desk in the dark while trying to locate a USB port on a computer, but if that's not long enough, you might add another USB extension in between, such as this  AmazonBasics USB 2.0 A-Male to A-Female Extension Cable (3.3 Feet/1.0 Meter)  to extend its reach.I found the female USB plug on the base to be a bit tight. Before using this unit, it helps to insert the male plug from the cord end and move it in and out a few times prior to using it with a USB flash drive, as some of those have fragile plugs.It's a good product, and for my personal needs, it's not just a good moveable port for USB flash drives. It provides an excellent base for my  Goal Zero 14101 Luna USB LED Stick Light  as an accessory work light on the desktop. Unlike other similar products, this one is weighted just enough to keep the light from getting too tipsy when plugged into the dock-style port, though sometimes a simple adjustment on the flexible neck of the light cures that problem. Having the 90° vertical port helps quite a bit.The  StarTech 5ft Desktop USB Extension Cable  works well as an extension dock in a variety of configurations, and not just as a desktop port for USB flash drives. I purchased this for use specifically with a USB Bluetooth adapter, which I use to connect PS5 DualSense controllers to my PC. Having the Bluetooth adapter directly connected to the PC can cause interference issues, especially with USB 3.0 ports, and I was occasionally experiencing controller dropouts.Using this adapter allows me to move the Bluetooth adapter away from the PC, and directly into line-of-sight of the controller. Also since the adapter is USB 2.0, it does not have the interference issues caused by USB 3.0.Overall this adapter works great for my needs and I've yet to experience any controller dropouts while using it.

Bought this to have table top USB port for ease of connection. Went with USB 3.0 version for any future use. Front of desktop (Dell Optiplex 9020, Win7Prox64) is right next to leg and was afraid I would hit SanDisk Cruzer thumb drive and snap it off.First, the quality of construction appears very nice, its not that large and is unobtrusive on the desk.It is weighted and sits flat on the desk.The SanDisk Cruzer and WD Passport cable fits very easily and has a little play, no problems at all with a tight fit (mentioned by others).The cable is thicker, but is USB 3.0 labeled and remember USB 3.0 uses more wires inside and you need/want high quality shielding. Even with the thicker cable it is still adequately flexible. Cheaper cable will not give you the higher speed.The cable is 5 ft and was a good length for desktop/desk application.All connectors are colored blue indicating USB 3.0 compatibility.No software/drivers needed.It is connected to a USB 3.0 slot on the back of my Dell OptiPlex 9020.Tested with SanDisk Cruzer USB 2.0 thumbdrive and data transfer rate was the same as directly plugging Cruzer to front of Dell.Tested with Western Digital Passport USB 3.0 and once again data transfer rate was the same as directly plugging to USB 3.0 on front of Dell.This implies that even with 5 feet of cable, the quality of the signal is not degraded and that transfers are occurring error free.

Used it for a fingerprint reader, works well, good quality.
