All About Steve

Cheesy, but important themes and a creative main character
This is a movie that will, at several times, make you cringe. It has the quintessential cheesy vibes of the 2000s. The characters are not particularly likable and for the first chunk of the movie the main character, Mary, was annoying to the point of being unredeemable. I was surprised when, after awhile, I started to notice her quirks - though aggravating, had an edge that was admirable. She's the perfect example of someone very naive, maintaining an intense optimism and lack of social awareness. Repeatedly it is highlighted how she is not normal - and for awhile she wavers about continuing to be herself. But in the end, as awkward and weird and socially disruptive as she is, she decides to be herself despite all her challenges and sometimes cruel consequences of her personality. Throughout the movie you start to see her overwhelming knowledge of seemingly inconsequential facts help in the face of problems. The movie closes with the sentiment that you shouldn't change to be "normal," and accepted by the majority. You just have to find people in life that align with your level or version of "normal." I think the message of this movie is a good one - there will always be people out there that you can connect with, no matter how alone you might feel. We all have our own types of weird and too often in society we pretend and mask our quirks in favor of acceptance. That prevents us from making real, meaningful connections. You'll likely find most characters annoying and parts cringe worthy, but the movie is entertaining enough. Especially when you've been watching too many crime shows with violence or anything with heavier themes like I have. I wouldn't say there is that much "content" - there's a make out scene that indicates leading to more, but doesn't actually happen. There are some moments with sexual content, but they are brief.

The Co-star of this movie were those red boots
There is a way to like flawed little escapists films with a really cute lead who wears silly red boots and a leading man with piercing blue eyes. You suspend your disbelief and just go with it. I really like this film.In spite of it's almost unbelievable story line it did what good stories are supposed to do. It followed it's purpose straight down the spine. it wasn't trying to be something it's not. It asked you to accept the premise and go with the absurdity of it. And in the end it taught you a valuable lesson about life. Be yourself and things have a way of working themselves out.I confess All About Steve is on my list of guilty pleasures. Thank you for the opportunity to get away from it all and take a deep breath. This film was fun. I really liked it.

A heartwarming joy of a flick
This was an unexpected joy of a movie. I thought all the actors, especially Sandra B, did a fantastic job. Mary, SB's character appears to be maybe on the spectrum of Asperger syndrome with an encyclopedia intelligence, funny/ quirky mannerisms, obsession, etc; and a knowing of self determination of who she is. Literally LOL funny. It's over the top and yet one of the most heartwarming movies I've seen. Forshadowed Spoiler: My only complaint is that when she meets the deaf girl, Mary doesn't know ASL; to the next scene, all of a sudden, she knows what the girl is signing, and then Mary signs back the word: again. When did she learn ASL, lol? But, this is really a great hearted spirited movie with the overall theme being: Stay true to You, Sparkle on & find your tribe. May we all be as true to ourselves as Mary Horowitz.

Be open minded and not too serious, it's a comedy!
I read in a news link to some piece of tabloid trash that said Sandra Bullock received a Razzie for this film. I decided to watch it because she was quoted as saying what I considered to be a convincing defense for the film and her performance.A lot of people have been really hard on this movie, and I'm glad I gave it a chance. It's quirky, goofy and lighthearted, so if you watch it expecting a typical romantic comedy where "boy meets girl and they fall head over heels in love against all odds" or you are looking for some kind of life-changing message ... then I'm predicting that you'll be disappointed. All About Steve is a spoof with over the top characters who demonstrate particular personality traits to an extreme. Sandra Bullock was portrayed as a satirical version of a person with an IQ that's off the charts but appears to have very little common sense, can be annoying as hell because their brain is in overdrive most of the time, and they have no clue as to when they should simply keep their mouths shut. It's like their head is so full that they can hardly contain all of the information they have. Her character is so much like some of the total brainiacs I've known: a plethora of information (often seemingly useless until you need it), a tendency to talk incessantly, and they often don't pay much attention to what other people think of them. But those same people can are oftten very compassionate and don't intend to distance, offend or hurt others with their words or actions ... sometimes it seems like they can't help but say exactly what's on their mind regardless of the subject matter, circumstances or the company they're in.Without being too serious or losing the tongue-in-cheek aspect of the plot, the movie touches on the other side of that type of personality and the trouble those individuals might have relating to others - and vise versa. Maybe you need to have known a similar person to appreciate the humor in this movie ... or at the very least be in the mood to watch an off the wall comedy with an underlying theme that might subtly inspire you to at least consider people for who they really are or take a closer look before you casually write them off. It's a COMEDY! It's not intended to be a deep, philosophical drama. My review probably sounds defensive and overly serious for a movie that is intended to be funny and entertaining. Well, I certainly found it to be both. I can only imagine how much it sucks to have people annihilate you while you should be reveling in the victory of winning an Oscar. It just goes to show you that the price you pay for fame is living under a microscope 24/7.Give this movie a chance and hopefully you'll have a few laughs. If it's not your thing, don't write this movie off and make it sound like a failure on the part of those involved simply based on your personal taste in movies or what you typically expect from the actors that were involved.

Not actually the worst film made after all
In case you didn't know, Sandra Bullock was nominated for `Worst Actress' at the annual `Razzie' awards for her performance in `All About Steve.' She even bucked tradition and went to the ceremony to accept it. That is how well the film is generally thought of - as one of the worst you could watch that year.So why did the usually bankable and charming Ms Bullock come a cropper with this one? Well, she does actually play her usual, i.e. charming self. The film was marketed as a typical kooky comedy which she is known for. However, instead of being loveable, she's annoying, or rather deliberately annoying. Her character, although being intelligent, seems to have difficulty picking up on other people's non verbal communications. In many ways (and this is NEVER addressed in the movie) she shares some traits with aspergers sufferers. Therefore, she openly stalks a man who she believes is really her soul mate.Yes, there are some funny moments on the way, but, in a film where you expect to be rooting for Sandra, you find yourself sympathising with everyone BUT her! This is Sandra Bullock's `The Cable Guy,' i.e. a film where a normally comic actor chooses to deliberately mix things up by playing a much darker version of what they're normally known for.The ending is a bit predictable (and somewhat unrealistic), but, if you can forgive that, plus realise that you're not actually going to like Sandra Bullock's character that much in this one, then you could just sit back and enjoy it for being quite an entertaining satire on the American news networks. Not great, but definitely not the worst film ever made either.

It's just a bit, meh.
Ok let's be clear: it's not a great film, rather a light-hearted comedy with little substance. It's a good film to watch if you're knackered and don't want to focus on something too complex.Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper play their roles very well. Towards the end, it becomes a little ridiculous but that's the writers fault! Some of the supporting cast are more annoying than endearing. It's not TERRIBLE, just not great. Sort of, meh.If I had the choice, I would have watched it for free on Netflix / Amazon Prime rather than purchase it. Save your money, buy a funny-comedy instead.

Not as bad as some say
Definetly a nice movie and not as bad as some say. And definetly not so bad to deserve a Razzy (the reason why I wanted to see for myself). The story is thin and told a million times before but still it's a nice movie about finding to yourself despite what others think about you. Since I'm a Sandra Bullock fan I have to say that she's been better but she's been worse. So don't expect to much but don't misss out on it just because some people think it's silly - which it is, but in a charming way.One good reason to watch it is Bradley Cooper - he takes off his shirt which is always a damn good reason to watch his movies.

Daft but fun
This turned up quite quickly so thank you to the seller and my postman, also called Steve. Watched it on Saturday night - it is just a daft chick-flick but that is what I expected. I do like Sandra Bullock, and wasn't expecting a great artistic work, just a laugh, which it was. Some very awkward and gauche moments in there which made me cringe particularly the scene 5 minutes into the date. But hey, who can blame her. I would do the same. He was the only reason I purchased this DVD!!!!!

Well worth seeing if at times difficult to watch
I think this was a rather misunderstood movie as it didn't get high reviews but at the same time it is a difficult subject. Bullock likes to portray unusual people now and again, a character with some kind of social problem as this one has. Have patience and look at how well she acts, and how moving the final part of the movie is. A very difficult subject to put over, I think, just as is the child in her more recent movie about an ADHD child.
