This Excellent "Indie" Film is Worth a View !
I'm going to try to make this review relatively short, although if I were discussing it with a friend, I could go on and on for some time. If you want a quick "synopsis" of the plot, just read the editorial review provided when you click on the movie. I think what I'll try to do here is focus on the the individual actors and what they brought to the film.CHLOE GRACE MORETZ: Keep an eye on her. She's a great talent, and we'll be seeing much more of her as time goes on. She has the intelligence and acting intuition of a woman nearly twice her age. She 'immerses' herself in her characters, and literally becomes them. She's not afraid to bring her "entire" level of emotions onscreen as in the nearly final "shooting" scene. In addition, she's a flat out beautiful young lady who can adapt to practically any character.EDDIE REDMAYNE: Truth be told, I'd never seen this guy before in any movie. Yet while I watched HICK, I thought to myself..." wow this guy is outstanding! He really brings everything to the table here....VERY convincing" Then on top of it as I watched the "special features" after the movie ( as I always do)..I discovered a little additional "secret" about the actor as well. It blew me away! Be sure to watch the actor "interviews" after the movie to discover what it was !!BLAKE LIVELY: This was one of the best roles I've seen her in. She's a "natural" as Glenda the "grifter on the run" with no real home, and tons of "street smart" experience. She's got some wonderful lines from screenwriter / author Andrea Portes as well. Good stuff.RAY McKINNON: This movie is set in the late 70's early 80's, and McKinnon plays a wealthy construction contractor known all over the area. He's a pompous , alcoholic "womanizer". In the in-home bar scene where McKinnon dresses down and humiliates Eddie Redmayne, who's serving the drinks....his temperament and emotions virtually change on a dime from good to bad and back. I, personally, lived with an alcholic stepfather who often displayed that same pattern of emotions, and Ray'sportrayal of it was dead on !ANDREA PORTES: Wrote both the book and the screenplay for this film. She's a gifted storyteller and she knows how to capture a very dysfunctional and morbid "slice of life" in this story.DERICK MARTINI: Once again....never heard of this guy. But he proved to be a very accurate and insightful director for "HICK". He pulled out some absolutely outstanding performances from all these fine actors / actresses.... I purchased a copy online, the very same night I watched it. There ARE people like this out there, folks. Maybe their stories don't end with all the drama andseverity that this story does....but it's all believable from where I've been. I hope, if you decide to see it, that you enjoy it for it's "good points".....

Enjoyed It.
Not bad really. It seems to be set somewhere in range of the early 80's. Having grown up in a semi-rural area around that time, I can say that the characters depicted are a fairly accurate representation of the types you would meet when you step a bit off the beaten path. Some of the plot jumps were somewhat awkward, like when she wakes up with a different haircut/color...how?...what?...when did?...never mind. That was something of a glaring stretch which, wouldn't have been so bad, except it didn't seem to have any real bearing on the rest of the storyline. Maybe they just wanted to reinforce how much of a whack-job Eddie was but that was pretty well established already by then. I liked the cinematography. It didn't feel like a copied style and was impressive. Maybe the best part, which I didn't fully realize until it was over, not even a hint of politics. Thank you so much to the creators! Finally someone has realized that the role of entertainment is to entertain, not to inject politics into every single thing.

Not a very good movie, but has a great soundtrack
Three stars is probably generous for the movie, but I loved the soundtrack - Dylan, Patsy Cline,Willie Nelson, Dolly and Kennie, Canned Heat, and others. I thought the story was rather poorly done, although the actors did a good job with what they had. This girl was impulsive, mouthy, and not at all street smart. What would have happened to her in real life would have been much, much worse than anything that happened in the movie. The murder scene was ridiculous. The gun, which this girl left lying around in her purse throughout the movie, had 4 empty chambers? And how did she know the 6th one had a bullet. And Beau's offer to make it look like a lover's suicide pact was equally ridiculous. People don't shoot themselves in the chest when they commit suicide. And what was the invitation to go to LA - where did that come from? Just a poorly done story, and even as awful as her life was, it was hard to develop empathy for such an a smart mouth, foolish, simple minded brat who in real life would have paid dearly for her street ignorance, lack of judgment of character, and bad decisions.

Clueless Critics
I admit to being a big fan of Chloe Moretz-I think she is the finest young actress out there now,so I will check out all her work as she moves along in her career. On the weekend Dark Shadows was released,I was suprised to see this little film she was in had come out(I had heard nothing about it),and was curious to see it.I was shocked at how every "pro critic" panned it on a level I have almost never seen. If you only look at those reviews, you might think it is the worst film ever made. I still wanted to see it,but it didn't come out anywhere that I could. In fact,on the week it was released on DVD,it wasn't even available on the cable system "on demand". The worst films made get treated better. So the DVD shows up,and a friend and I(who also is a fan of hers)sit down to watch it. I warn her about the horrid reviews, and we were all set to see a very bad movie. Were these paid critics watching the same film as I saw? It was dark, and often very intense. But it was a really good movie, with outstanding acting,a well done script, and well done in terms of filming and editing. There were no scenes of anything over the top shown on screen. If you are into watching things that explore the kind of subjects involved in this film, you should be sure and give it a chance. To the "pro critics" who tried to destroy this film-maybe they need a new job, because they do not know anything about movies. This is a solid effort that can make you sad, make you feel, make you think, and once in awhile, make you have to chuckle a bit. It's worth giving it a chance to see what you think, and not what you were told to think.I will buy it again if it is made available on blue-ray.

Much better than critics suggest.
This is a slow moving film, true. But, it is a film which if the viewer sticks with it, develops into a harrowing account of a young, immature teenage girl's flight from an isolated, abused homelife, into her dream world of fortune and love. Of course it doesnt work out. It doesn't work out in real life either. It never does. Yet many young teenagers hang to this dream of the grass being so much greener beyond their current circumstances. Sometimes it can be, but the route to that improved life is never easy and full of risk and very real danger, as amply demonstrated in this film. In this film the teenager ( Moretz) superbly plays out that misguided, well intentioned, but naive, hopelessly lost, teenager. This storyline will be familiar to many parents and teenagers. The misfortunes which befall Moretz on her journey are not over the top. They are the consequences of life in a particular stream of humanity. Eddie Redmayne superbly plays a warped, mentally damaged young man, who trys to take Moretz under his wing. His character quickly develops into a controlling, maniacal, dangerously disturbed young man. On her journey of "escape" Moretz finds herself taking many turns, usually for the worse. This account is honest, frank and exposes the dangers facing youngsters whose view of their present life is less than satisfactory. It is well cast, well shot. Revealing much of very rural America, exposing dated values and morals. It is certainly worth a watch, far better than its slow paced start might suggest.

Worth a Watch If You're a Fan of Chloe Moretz.
The movie is nothing special in my opinion but the acting overall is decent (especially by Chloe Moretz and Eddie Redmayne). For fans of Chloe who have only seen the obvious movies such as Kick-Ass and Carrie, this will come as nice addition to the collection. Thought that the special features on the dvd were somewhat lacking as the "Making Of" seemed to consist mainly of the actors talking about how great everybody else was.

I heard that this is the worst film Eddie Redmayne had been in
I heard that this is the worst film Eddie Redmayne had been in, so naturally I was curious. It is a good film, rather interesting. The acting is brilliant. Without the great actors I would have given it four stars but with the great acting it gets five.
