Homework Helpers: Physics, Revised Edition

Saved me.... big time.
This book was an absolute lifesaver for Physics 105. I had a strong math background but that's not enough for the material presented in the course. I read the Homework Helper Physics (HHP) book, which is a fairly easy read, before moving into each section of my actual textbook. I found that the formulas and explanations in the textbook were WAY more complicated than what they needed to be.This HHP book really boiled it down so I had a good foundation for understanding the topics. That being said, learning the material from this HHP book created some challenges for my work in the textbook. The variables in the equations were not used the same. I pretty much had to decide which way I was going to do things and stick with it. I decided I liked the equations/variables from the HHP book instead of my text so I had to translate all the future equations the textbook presented (beyond what this book covers). This book covers about 70% of the topics we learned in the course... so it's not going to provide a homework helper for everything. However, for the topics it does cover it is exceptionally handy. I got an A, but barely. One tip/insight for Physics 105 - it's not like any course I've had before or since. Basically Physics should be renamed "Applied Math Problems: working them over and over and over again." It takes a lot of practice - actually working and reworking problems - to "get it." There is no shortcut way of pulling off a Physics 105 course if you want an A. Physics will be your date on Friday nights for the duration of the semester!

Not Bad but Not Fantastic
I liked the author Greg Curran's approach to teaching from this ebook. He genuinely knows physics. But there are no colored, rather black & white illustrations only. That is to say, it is all black and white text. Such a textual layout is not bad, but it isn't all that fantastic in my opinion either. In reality, physics is one of those tough subjects that needs visual aids. Moreover, the student or curious reader needs to be able to envision what is being talked about. In order to get over this hurdle I had to read the textbook and then watch physics videos such as Walter Lewin's at MIT, in order to get a full blown understanding of each physics topic. Still it is a great teaching guide if you can do without visual aids.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in foundational classical physics. It will teach you the fundamentals for sure. It's just that, you will have to find other ways to visualize the textbook's content. This is why I rated it three stars only.Once again, it's not a bad book, but it's not fantastic either. Without sounding repetitive or like I am contradicting myself I suggest you buy this little textbook in kindle format or whatever format yourself, and you be the judge. You might form a better opinion of the content than I did after you've gone through it. Good Reading!

AWESOME
This book is SUPERB on the topics it does contain. It studies mechanics, electricity, magnetism, thermodynamics and heat, and nuclear/atomic physics. All of these topics are written well and explained clearly; like I said, it's very good on the topics it DOES contain. The only problem I've found with this book is that it doesn't include anything on Relativity or Quantum Mechanics. Yes, it does go in depth about light, photons, and the wave-particle duality of light. Very helpful overall in the basics, but it doesn't go into the really advanced topics. I can't tell if this was meant for College Physics or high-school physics........either way, the explanations were great and it is, really, a great book. If you're taking physics on any level, get this book.

Pros: - Concise - Well-written and well laid out - Covers most topics pretty well - Great for beginnersCons: - Some topics barely get talked about - Some topics aren't talked about at all -- ballistic pendulum and others - Many of the examples/problems are too simple and only cover very basic scenarios, when much more is neededOverall, a really good buy, but is best used in conjunction with a real textbook.

Good but not complete
This book did a really good job at introducing and explaining the concepts and helping me get a grasp of college intro physics. I used it first before reading the textbook allowing me to better understand the textbook. Without it I probably wouldn't have received an A in intro physics. However, it doesn't receive 5 stars from me because a couple of topics were missing (e.g. fluids, sounds and waves). I definitely recommend this book for any intro physics student in college or high school.

Well-written and Useful Introduction/Review of Physics
One of the reasons I bought this physics study aid was because I read Mr. Curran's "Homework Helpers-Chemistry" and found it to be an excellent help in my pursuit to learn Chemistry. The author once again has hit a homerun with his physics book. Concepts from the classical areas of physics (Newtonian mechanics, electricity, magnetism, light, thermodynamics)covered in a first-year course in high school or college are explained in a conversational style while retaining appropriate rigor. The chapter tests are well-written (with the answers to test questions explained), and the interspersed diagrams help to reinforce topics covered in each chapter. I'm glad I came across both of these books.

Homework Helper-Physics
The book arrived within a week and is helping me greatly prepare for the CSET science exam. Another excellent resourse is the Homework Helper-Chemistry. I recommend either of these books for anyone taking physics or chemistry at the high school, college level or someone like me preparing for a test. The Homework Helper assists me when I don't quite get the concept from the text book. Great resource. There are some questions that are given to help one understand and then the answers are just a few pages away.
