When it ran out I decided to try Doctor's Best's version. DB's Lutein costs 11 cents per capsule; Jarrow's costs 15 cents... not a big price difference actually, unless you're into taking large doses. (I usually take two at a time, so my "cost per serving" is 22 cents with Doctor's Best or 30 cents with Jarrow.)Jarrow's product is a liquid in softgels; DB's is a powder in a gelatin capsule.My impression after using them both is that Doctor's Best works as well as Jarrow's. I took some this evening, took a little nap, then after the nap found that my vision was sharp and clear... I could read tiny print on my computer screen without difficulty.SIDE EFFECTSI've taken lutein for years without side effects, but the last time I took it, my hands started itching. I looked up "lutein itching" and found that this is a known side effect. Another time, my eyelid started itching (another common side effect). In both cases, the itching passed after a few minutes. I didn't experience itching when I took Jarrow's product, so will probably switch back to Jarrow when it's time to reorder.I don't know why I experienced itching when taking DB's product; it may just be a personal idiosyncrasy. I haven't seen evidence that others react this way. So at this point, I'd recommend both brands equally.

In spite of my doctor's advice that these supplements have no effect, I'm determined to continue to get good checkups from him, perhaps due to my supplementation! Comparing available brands and strengths, I know Dr.'s Best to be a reliable brand and they're less expensive than some others with the same content.

I’m giving this to my 3 year old dog that has hereditary cataracts. I was giving him the dog supplements but I’m not sure if they are really making a difference in his vision and this is more cost effective - especially with something I’m not sure can be helped. He gets one every morning with some peanut butter.

The capsules are easy to swallow and do not have any residual aftertaste. The amount of lutein inside each capsule is also substantial or more than the amount that other alternative lutein capsules contain, which means increased effectiveness. I highly recommend this product that I can't go a day without!
