Exam Ref 70-762 Developing SQL Databases

No editing, too confusing to be used as a study guide.
This is so hard to read, it is difficult to use as a study guide. The poor grammar includes sentence fragments and extensive use of passive voice. I can read a sentence 3 times and still not understand what the point was. Aside from that there is poor organization. For instance, there are few transitions in the text, leaving it up to you to figure out that the author is now talking about a different example instead of the one he started the paragraph with. There are many parenthetical statements throughout which distract from the subject being discussed. There is a paragraph on filtered indexes in the middle of another index discussion which I still can't figure out, and does not explain further the index topic in the previous paragraph, and he goes back to discussing other indexes in the paragraph that follows. I don't think this book was edited at all. Maybe they accidentally published the first draft?MSSQLTips has an article on resources for the 70-762 exam that you can use to prepare. This includes books such as Pro SQL Server Internals and others that you can order, and some you can get free. It also has links to specific online articles on specific topics for the exam. MVA has a training course for the previous version of the exam that can also help, That is my new strategy.

because there is no easy way to get back to where you were
I bought the online version, as it appears there is no practice material regardless of which version you buy. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about that.) There are many problems with this book.1. It doesn't appear to cover the new material such as temporal tables, which will likely be prominent on the exam.2. Most of the pages include "Click here to review code image" which just sends you to a link at the far end of the book with a picture of the code shown directly below. Once you click on the link I hope you know where you came from, because there is no easy way to get back to where you were.3. Appears hastily thrown together. Puts the onus on the reader to figure out what is likely or unlikely on the exam.4. If you keep track of your pages, the page shown at the bottom does not correspond to where it takes you when you use the "Go to Page" menu item. This is an amazon feature, and so amazon may be to blame here, but at any rate no attempt was made between the author and the kindle book to keep things accurate.5. No PDF version. No practice exam. No material that is not available on BOL. Just a book full of advice. Skip it.

No substitute for knowledge and experience, still not as helpful as could be expected.
Honestly, who edits these books? I've used both this book and the 70-761 book to study for my MCSA. I passed, but I feel like the practice tests were much more practically useful in preparing me than the books--and the only books seemingly to be had are from Microsoft's press store. It's infuriating that these books are the only resources available that don't involve hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth of preparation, and I have no doubt that Microsoft does it than way deliberately for that very reason.

Poorly written
I have read a book from a different autor to take the first exam and I passed it with a very high score. Now I am using this book to take the second exam but this book is extremely confusing. Some time I have to read 5 times the same paragraph and I still will not understand what this author is trying to explain. I don’t recommend this book to take the exam because even though all the content may be there it was poorly written.

Good content; don't like the format
I fihd the content of this book to be relevant and I think it will be a big help toward passing my exam. There are some grammital errors which are annoying but they aren't going to affect if the book helps me or not. I do not like the format however. The book tries to mirror the course outline with just 4 chapters which are very long. Within each chapter, are headings for the different skills covered which follow one another without page separations. This makes it harder for me to track and reviev. I would preferred shorter chapters for each skill broken down by sections.

Some good content, but disappointing review material
I bought this book to prepare me for Exam 70-762, so the 3-star rating is based on how well I feel it has prepared me for the exam that I will take in two days.Positives:- It contains material for the exam that I have not seen elsewhere ... all the 2016 material.Constructive Criticisms:- The lesson review material is poor. It contains chapter summaries and thought experiments at the end of the chapters. As a comparison, Training Kit for Exam 70-461 had more frequent and more plentiful review - quick checks, lesson summaries, lesson reviews, and case scenarios. Here's how I've prepared:- Watched Microsoft Virtual Academy's videos - 70-461 Querying with TSQL and 70-464 Developing SQL Databases- Read Training Kit Exam 70-461- Read Exam Ref 70-762 Developing SQL Databases- Downloaded and experimented with the sql content from VMA's 70-464 and with Exam Ref 70-762- As I was going through the videos and books, I made flash cards and used those for review. It seemed like a lot of work to watch the videos and read two books. It might have been, but it also gave me a better perspective on the different concepts.Good luck!Me: I was a dba using ms-sql 2005 for a few years and I've been using mysql for the past 10 years.

An important reference for the exam.
I let some of the negative reviews here put me off buying this book until later in my study for this exam. If you're in the same position, don't hesitate. If you're familiar with the subject matter this book is not hard to understand (at all). I do wonder whether it's had a rewrite, as I don't feel like some of the reviews here make any sense. This exam is hard enough to study for as there isn't much up to date material out there. Even Microsoft's recommended (Pearson Vue) test exam is riddled with errors and incorrect answers. The book is definitely worth having.Edit: Actually the further I get into this book the more mistakes I see. I've taken a star off. Still invaluable reading if you can see past the grammatical errors.

Useful reference book spoiled by lack of proof-reading
I was surprised at how bad the English grammar, spelling, punctuation and layout was throughout sections of the book, in some parts of the book it detracted from the message. I understand that the book is written by multiple authors, some of who probably don't speak English as their first language. I don't have a problem with that as that is what proof-readers are for and technical editors are for but they did not do their job properly for this book.I have read many Microsoft Press books in the past and the inclusion of a cd/dvd with practice questions and a pdf version of the book was always extremely useful. These goodies have gone, you have to buy the pdf and the exam questions if you want them.I passed the exam after using this book to check up on my knowledge and I was deciding between a 3 or a 4 but decided to plump for the 3.

Covers most concepts but not well composed
First off, a disclaimer: I'm only about half way through the book at this point. But I think I've read enough to comment on it...This book seems to cover off most important topics for the exam on some level. Ideas are outlined in some detail and simple examples are given to examine how the concepts would work in real life. So far so good. However, I find it difficult to believe that this book was ever proof read. There are simple grammatical errors littering the text and some of the examples don't actually work verbatim requiring the syntax to be corrected. This is distracting for a study guide, and demands an obvious level of experience of the reader which you might not expect - since this book is designed to teach.

Good content, don't rely on it to pass the exam
I bought this book to revise for the exam after going on the relevant training course. Despite passing the exam, I would not recommend relying on this book to pass. Practice is invaluable, and database programming experience is definitely recommended. That being said, the book itself had a lot of good relevant content. The difficulty definitely increases after the first chapter.

Not great!
Really poorly written with very little structure around key concepts, i.e. query plans. Poor in comparison to book for exam 70-761
