Q: Looks like these speakers are ported, can water get into the speakers through the ports and cause damage if left in an open area?

Yes. I wouldn't call these speakers 100% water resistant. I would recommend placing them accordingly. Mine are outdoors, but under a roof that protects them from rain and direct sunlight.

Q: Is this 120w per speaker or total like 60 per speaker for a total of 120

Speaker power handling specs are nominal... look at the sensitivity. If it is really close to the 90db/w/m they claim, then the speaker will play pretty loud within its frequency range. But speakers can handle higher power at some frequencies, lower at others, so a single nominal figure can be misleading. It is very probable that most people would have plenty of power for this application at 40wpc, anyway. Just be aware that a speaker's actual power handling capabilities are more complicated than the usual specification can indicate, but it usually doesn't matter. The only thing that really does is the judgment of the person whose hand is on the volume control.

Q: Other than $100, what is the difference between the ap840 and the ap850?

Maybe too late w/answer, but the the 850's are 25% heavier so a lot tougher. Plus the frequency response drops down from 30hz to 22hz, so that's the biggest deal! But I am going to save the $100 and go w/the 840's! ----- I also just posted a question you may be able to help me with?------- I am hoping to hear they will not get water in thru the port holes in this Summer time thunderstorm state of Florida?(where the rain can frequently be seen coming down horizontally!) I read in one review that they should be prone to that problem, but I have not seen any customer complaints about it yet? Please let me know if you already pushed the buy button and if so how you like them and which one's you got? Thx! XD

You should be fine with an 16-18 gauge wire. Look for a wire with a heavy coating as it will need to hold us to the harsh environment of the weather and sun. This type of wire is not the clear wire, but instead it usually is white or gray in color. It should be fairly easy to find.
