Q: Does this printer use pigment or dye based inks? If both is there a pigment black for text and a dye based black for photos?

Robert, the printer uses a mix of both. There are five color inks, which are dye-based and used when printing photos, performing duplex (double-sided) printing, and when a paper type other than plain paper is selected. The printer also uses one larger pigment-based black ink and is used for your document printing when plain paper is selected, as well as when you are doing single-sided printing, and your document contains black text. Q: How fast does it print?

For me there's a 7-second warmup for a document, and then the document takes 5 to 10 seconds per page depending on content. This speed is for one-sided document printing ONLY. Automatic two-sided printing, when set, is unfortunately much slower, and a feature flaw, as the printer takes about 20 seconds to flip *each odd-numbered page*. Minimizing ink drying time in the menu does not fix this flaw. For large two-sided documents, you can print all the odd-numbered pages and flip them manually to print the even-numbered pages and get faster output. High-quality 4x6 photos may need 15-60 seconds of prep time for at least the first print in a session, and then need about 20 seconds each. Additional prints may only need 10 seconds prep time.

Q: what is the cost of replacement cartridges

Canon OEM ink cartridges are a little pricey .. see them here on Amazon. However, Amazon also carries many suppliers who offer compatible ink cartridges that cost only a small fraction of their Canon OEM cartridges. I recommend using the Canon OEM ink if you are printing high def photos and have to have the very best results. For routine printing I recommend these compatible cartridges. I've had a similar Canon MP500 printer for more than ten years (its still going strong) and I have always used these third party compatible ink cartridges.

Q: what are the best non canon inks for the TS9020?

I use LD ink jet. Tried others but they seem the best. Some times they have free shipping.
