Highly recommend this book for all educators! The chapters include discussion questions to use for professional development with staff members or for personal reflection. Dr. Erica Buchanan-Rivera reflects on both personal experience and extensive research to provide strategies in order to help all students feel a sense of belonging within your school and classroom. This is a must read!

This book has been a wonderful resource to study with school communities to rethink our best practices to be more inclusive and affirming! The guidance in this book is inspiring, practical, and most of all truly supports educators in reflecting on not just what the teach but how! A definite must have! Get it for your favorite educators! Teachers snd principals!

Educators wear many hats and this book makes a few of them easier to don. It provides strategies to help each of your students obtain what they need from you and your classroom to feel safe, seen and successful.

I’m not one to mark up books, but if I was — Identity Affirming Classrooms would be one long continuous highlight, in neon orange of course. (my fav color)

I really wish they had something like this in my classroom growing up. Then maybe I wouldn’t have went through the struggle I did. To fight to overcome the racial statics. Maybe it would’ve open their eyes back than that I wasn’t the problem. Why should I have to apologize for being multiracial.That’s why this needs to be taught today, tomorrow, and the future. No one should have to feel sorry for who they are.

Whether you’re an educator or not, this book is a very powerful, critical for those interact with youth and self-reflective. First and foremost, I like how the author proposes more than just questions, but actually provides well thought out solutions and strategies to aid in combating today's learning environment issues. I believe pre-service teachers to seasoned vets can relate to the ongoing climate and challenges in today's education system.This book provides several real world examples that point out the connection between student voices, the need for culturally responsive teaching and most importantly to be seen and heard by the adults who are suppose to help them. The knowledge and tools I ascertained is invaluable. Thank you Dr. Buchanan-Rivera for your vulnerability, courage and calling people to act. As Barack Obama said, “We are the change, we’ve been waiting for.”

This book will be a valuable resource for every educator. The personal reflections and mirror work is priceless. It has been a highly recommended read for an educator’s book club in our district. It should be a required read for all students seeking a degree in administration or teaching. Dr. EBR IS LEADING THE WAY.
