Photography

This book weighs in at more than a pound or two and is very dense. Pages are loaded with information, but so much of it covers film, that separating the current stuff from the rest is its own study exercise. It has great illustrations, and exceptional explanations, but film occupies so much of this book that it literally adds more weight. It may have made sense to publish a separate book just for film. This would lighten the number of pages, and provide more continuity to the format. On the other hand, if you like digging in to how photography really works from aberrations to zoom lenses, then firm up your muscles and lift this hefty tome. It was published in 2017 and is quite an accomplishment for a book of this type. But 2017 is well into the digital age and well past the film era. My intention is not to restart an old controversy of film vs. digital, but if you are using film today, there are probably better choices where you won't be distracted by digital discussions -- check the extensive Bibliography. And just so you know, the cover shows that this is the 40th Anniversay Edition and the 12th Edition of this book, which actually is confusing. So by 2023 the first one was printed 45+ years ago in 1977, and then updated 12 times since. Not many books can say that.

Very detailed and instructive text, with illustrative diagrams and photos.

I was looking for a book to help me with digital photography which is new for me. I had gotten into photography several years ago but did not advance in two days. Once I started on the sport I went through it completely. It had a lot more than just a photography for me.

A very helpful book, both for the beginning amateur and for the advanced amateur who desires a refresher or an asnwer to a challenging question of "how do I handle this situation". This book is well organized, making searches for specific topics fast. I have the Kindle electronic version as I wanted to take the book with me on my travels. Many times I have effectively used the book as a reference before I embark on the day's photo-activities. This enables me to prepare for expected conditions/situations.I strongly recommend this book. For me the Kindle electronic format is the best.

Photography 12th Edition is overpriced and just skims over subjects providing only the most basic information leaving you wanting for more. But more is not to be found as the authors just jump to the next subject and repeat the pattern. Many, in fact most of the book only has two pages devoted to each topic. While this may be fine when you have an instructor to expand on the topics, for anyone self studying, it simply doesn't work. This book attempts to cover every possible subject pertaining to photography and I mentioned, just scratches the surface of these subjects. Many will not be of interest to digital photographers as there is a large portion devoted to film and developing. For the price, one could purchase several books on the subjects of particular interest that will provide in depth coverage of the desired subject matter. In addition, the cover is flimsy and affords little protection to this costly book. I say skip it, unless of course it's required for your course, then complain to your instructor that this book is overpriced and is useless one you have completed the course. It simply doesn't contain enough in depth information to be used as a reference.

Obtained this for a class in photography. In short, it is an excellent class in photography in itself. The book goes into detail on everything from how to use a camera properly to framing shots, handling various shooting conditions and much, much more. Not cheap, but well worth the price if you are serious about learning photography the right way.

Very comprehensive book, recommended at the community college at which I took a two-year photography course. The information contained will give anyone all the knowledge they need to understand the technical and artistic nuances of photography and digital photography. A worthwhile purchase.
