Overview & Technical Details
Very much a fairly plain read by Tom Casaletto, functional but not that great a range. The mp3 files are split by book chapter and have been encoded at a bitrate of 96kbps at a rate of 44.1KHz. More than enough for spoken word. The files total 267MB in size.In case anyone is wondering the MP3 CD also includes a manifest showing that it was ripped to mp3 by iTunes 10.3.1 on 30th June 2015 using an Optiarc DVD RW AD-5260S 1.G0.

I wish I'd read it sooner!
**Contains minor plot spoilers**I have had this book on the shelf for ages - it was recommended to me by a colleague whose recs are always spot on, but because I bought the trilogy, the book was too heavy to take on a commute or plane. I have seen and enjoyed the film. A couple of days at home with a cold was the perfect opportunity to read the first part. The premise is that a man who calls himself prot and says he is from the planet K-PAX is being treated in a mental hospital because of his delusions. His doctor, the unimaginatively named Gene Brewer, is treating him and the book is written as a set of case notes. As the story progresses, prot wins the hearts and trust of many of the inmates and in his own way, cures them of their afflictions. He also seems to be able to read Gene's mind and demonstrates a knowledge of the planetary system of K-PAX which could not be made up or discovered (it is only just being mapped) Gene, however, is convinced that prot is a multiple personality and does a lot of research to try to find out who prot really is and what sent him into this other persona. He does this against a time clock as prot has announced his return to K-PAX at a certain date and time, which is about three months away when the story begins. The story is well written and right till the end, had me believing that prot was who he said he was, and then... the final chapter, when he `goes' had me wondering whether the doc was right after all. I like a book which keeps me guessing! I just wish I had read it sooner! The book is a quick and compulsive read and I think would also suit a reading group. Now my dilemma is - should I go on and read the second and third parts of the trilogy, maybe being disappointed as some of the other reviews suggest, or should I leave it for a while and return at a later date?

Once You Pick It Up, You Won't Put It Down
This a GREAT book. Author Gene Brewer has written this book under such an odd premise; a psychological case study. The story is told from the perspective of the psychologist, Dr. Gene Brewer. The author and main character have the same name. . . I don't know what that's all about. (maybe like how Tony Danza, always plays a "Tony")Well, I have to be honest. I saw the movie first. So, I know that I had a predetermined thought of what was going to happen. So in turn, having seen the film, I thought the book started off very cold. The psychologist, Dr. Brewer, is looking at the character "prot" (rhymes with goat), as delusional. Now, I understand that is how any psychologist would see this. But, nonetheless, it seemed very cold. The "cold" soon subsided and the novel turned around. There were wonderful descriptions of all of the characters. Dr. Brewer's family, prot, and patients in the hospital were are brilliantly detailed. The interactions between prot and his fellow patients were just wonderful. I won't go any further into the story or the characters, I don't want to spoil anything at all, especially if you haven't seen the film. Now, I am by no means a quick reader. It took me about a week to get halfway through this book. But the halfway point is where the book really gets good. After I hit halfway, it took me a whole two hours to finish the rest. I could not put it down. The story had an intensity, perhaps even an urgency that was just infectious. I ate, did laundry, and smoked without putting the book down in that last two hours. It is probably one of the best books I have read. I am looking forward to reading the sequel.epc

Interesting novel
Bought for my teenage non-reading son, and he is enjoying it. I struggle to find him books that are adult enough to appeal but not too difficult to read, this one is succeeding in holding his interest. An alien has been hospitalised as a psychiatric patient...but is he an alien or is he a psychiatric patient, or neither?

Enthralling read
I purchased this book rather randomly yesterday and by 3 this morning i had finished, it grabs you and wont let go. What suprised me mostly was the use of the first person narrative. The author is able to conjure up fabulous, detailed and humble descriptions of all the patients and coworkers . . The book does not loose pace whatsoever throughout, the ingenious chapter naming device helped this greatly, the reader is absorbed and really just needs to read that next chapter to have another fill of prot's wonderful thoughts. The book is also incredibly funny. The conversations and amazing ideas that are put forward just make you sit back and just laugh at how amazing it is just to be alive and thinking freely, and even those patients who are confined are shown to be willing and free whenever they put their energies to it.An awesome, thought provoking read...needless today i went and purchased the second book today... and it just seems to get better.

Sacks in Space
I read K-Pax after seeing the film. It's a pretty good mix of Oliver Sacks style psychoanalysis and sci-fi. It maintains the 'what-if' basis of storyline for much of the book, but towards the end I feld a lot of the suspense had vanished. The film adds a few scenes from k-Pax II, and is, to be honest, a good version of the book. In fact, the book doesn't really offer anything extra over the film, which is a shame.A word of warning though - the books go downhill considerably after this one.

A very complex story - and a cool 3-D picture on the cover
I really liked this story and the writing style. I'm hesitant to say anything because I don't want to accidentally give something away, but suffice it to say that the story keeps you guessing the whole time - just when you think you've definitely got it figured out, another piece of data comes along to muck up the works. Well worth the read. (And there's a cool 3-D picture on the dust cover of the book.)

This is a really good book; full of thoughtful ideas that people should be thinking about. The most prominent theme is that one should always treat others as equals with respect, compassion, and acceptance.
