If you have a hardware store with a garden center anywhere nearby, you would be able to buy a bag of mulch easily six times larger than this for... a lot less money than this. But the hardware store doesn't offer mulch in small quantities, and I was not looking forward to trying to maneuver a huge bag of mulch onto public transport (let alone take it out when I got to my stop). So I got this.The block rehydrates to about half the volume of the bag, not almost the whole thing like the picture on the back shows. This does rehydrate to a generous bit more than a gallon, so I did get the amount of mulch promised, but the picture on the back is somewhat misleading.According to a couple of quick unit conversion calculations, if you spread this amount of mulch one inch thick, you will cover 4 square feet, and if you spread this mulch two inches thick, you will cover 2 square feet. One inch thick is enough to deter weeds and visually cover the soil, but if you want to use mulch for water conservation purposes, it will need to be at least two inches thick, and possibly more.

Not super fantastic but certaintly not a bad product. Expands pretty decently and I havent smelt anything. I have a succulent I put next to my bed and I had to put it in a bigger pot. I decided to mix mulch with fertilizer (no one wants to smell cow manure in their bedroom). Honestly it works amazing in the smell department. A lot of mulch comes in that tiny little bag too. Only used like an eighth of what was there

I have a small balcony to garden on, so any other type of mulch has been too much trouble. This stuff stores so small, I usually keep a block of it on hand now. It's easy to plump up and once in a plant, stays fresh-looking and nice for at least months--probably longer. I've started using it in my indoor containers too. "Scent" is a weird one to rate--I said five stars because I don't notice a strong scent from it, good or bad, so if you want to smell cedar chips, this may not do it for you. But I happen to like that it's not a strong scent, since I'm sitting literally right next to the containers.

Well, to add whate everyone else has stated, it does not fill the bag as shown in the pic.. However, I bought this product for the convenience. Big bags of mulch are to heavy to carry up 3 flights and i only have a few plants on my patio that i need to worry about. .

This is the best thing since sliced bread! I’ve ordered it twice now and absolutely love it. It’s so easy and clean to work with and my plants love it! Repotting is so easy and clean now and I can do it all in my kitchen. Very little clean up with just a broom and dustpan. I will definitely buy more as I need it and never bother with messy soil again. Comes neatly packed in the regular mail and only takes a few minutes to make up 5 quarts.

Easy to use, simple Instructions. I wore gloves to mix it up and break it around but you don't have to-just wet wood chips (after you add water). Perfect amount for several small houseplants, one large indoor tree houseplant, a small rose of Sharon plant and a Hardy mum plant I transplanted to get grounded before winter.

Bought this for the potted plants I have on my patio. This does a great job of helping the plants retain moisture in the soil, even with the crazy 90 degree weather and humidity currently happening in DC. came in a super compact block, just add water and it turns into lots of mulch. Used it to cover 3 large pots and had some left over. Perfect for us apartment dwellers who don't have anywhere to store giant bags of mulch!

This is one of the best mulch I ever used. It works great and the garden loves it. My only issue is that it's sold in low quantities.

The cost what I paid for this I could’ve bought 5 pound bag that expense for the same price of this little tiny bit
