Well, I fold mine in quarters so that the don't hang past the edge of the plate. I'd say you can probably fit 6 or 8 bills that way before it gets unduly thick. Folded in half like the illustration you can double that.

Q: what are the dimensions of the bands (not the dimensions of the package)?

The band is 3/4" wide, the inner length is 3". You need a sizeable wad of cash for this item to work properly. They're sitting in my draw because I normally don't carry hundreds of $1bills on me.
