I've never had anything closed to that happening, but I only go out on calm days. If it gets too windy it's easy to bring it down.

Absolutely, it will work with aluminum gunwales. The hardware will mount right to the aluminum gunwales, much as it would mount to plastic, wood, polycarbonate, etc. If you are not afraid of drilling a few holes, it is super easy, and comes with very detailed instructions, and all hardware.
