HOW MIGRANTS LIVE AND DIE
As the public mood in western Europe shifts towards a demonization of immigrants, this moving novel explores the harsh reality behind population moves. The protagonists, two Afghan boys, must leave their violent, imploding home country in order to survive. The book traces their journey, started in hope, and the bitter experiences which gradually break their spirits. Next time you walk past some shabbily dressed, dejected-looking youngsters talking in a strange language on your street, don't just give them a wide berth. Think about what might have brought them there. It is likely to be nothing more than the quest for a normal life, based on finding jobs which local people won't do. How might you feel if you had to flee Britain because it could no longer keep you safe or fed?

Loved it
I thought this was a lovely book, the writing style might not be to everyones taste but in the present economic time when there is alot of negative coverage in the media about asylum seekers it was refreshing to read a novel about the plight of these young people that was not written from a political point of view.A book that can make you think twice and make you really appreciate the advantages of having being born in Britain, something that we all take too much for granted.I really enjoyed it and would recommend.

Should have been Book of the Year....sadly, it's not!
We chose this for our Book Club choice, having read details of its release. The subject matter is topical, and we thought we were in for a treat. Sadly, we were very disappointed. Of course, from a humanitarian point of view, we very much care about the plight of young Afghans, but the writer did nothing in the narrative to encourage our caring. The writing is stilted and flat; short sentences in prose have their place, but the book is riddled with abrupt, stumpy sentences, stabbing the reader's flow and enjoyment of what should have been a deeply engaging tale. We struggled to keep our interest in it, the narrative was so sadly lacking in engagement. There are phrases that take the reader miles away from the plight of the boys, i.e. "...like tumbling Lottery balls.." Oh dear, sorry to be so negative for the writer's first novel; the idea of the book was a good one, but it does not live up to a reader's expectation. The subject matter, better handled, should have produced a Book of the Year...for us, it was Bore of the Year. Hinterland
