nostalgia
This is one of those books I randomly grabbed from the library and ready cover to cover when I was probably 10 years old(35 now). The only specific things I recalled about it was the football physical which I had already been through and the word 'gonads' which I had never heard before, and last chapter titled "girl" which had a surreal effect on me at the time, a sort of genetic awakening. Despite not remembering much specifically, the charisma and confidence of the main character is kind of the basis of the character I played when I wrote and played songs for my garage band, I always wondered where he came :) The language and subjects are not for the weak minded :)

Loved this book in 1986
I was raised in an all female house and to talk about puberty was a very taboo subject. When I was in 7th grade back in the stone ages I felt very alone and this book gave me something to help normalize the experience. I bought the book for my cousin that is in the 7th grade and he love it. He actually read the entire book which is weird since having him read has been a real struggle. So the book is informative, entertaining and you get the extra bonus that the kid is reading.

Mellow, non-fart-based humor
At some point you have to transition from fantasy adventure and fart based humor to something more advanced. But you're not ready for problem novels about drugs and sex, or raunchy novels about drugs and sex. Enter Spinelli. In this book, and especially again in "Stargirl", Spinelli introduces a new kind of character: decent, well-intentioned, inexperienced and just trying to get by and make sense. He treats his characters with great generosity, he allows them all an opportunity for forgiveness and growth. He treats his readers the same way: with humor and respect. So, as either a nice piece of fiction, or as a how-to manual for seventh graders, this book works.

A little worrisome...
I bought this for my 11-year-old son for Christmas after he said he had been looking for it in the school library; he has read other books by Jerry Spinelli that he enjoys. When he was about half-way through, he came to me rather concerned because, as he put it, it had a lot of "bad words" and other things that were "inappropriate." I asked what words, and he said the "S-word" and the "D-word" every couple pages. He is enjoying the book though and says it's very funny, but if you're at all concerned with your "4th grade and up" kid reading profanity this might not be the book for you.

Pretty good
This book is very accurate in some spots but others just made me confused. But for the most part it was a very fun read! 4 out of 5 stars.
