.com Since bursting onto the charts and into national consciousness with 1998's sophomore album, Big Calm, Morcheeba have carved a niche as purveyors of evocative nuevo-lounge and dreamy ambience. While 2000's Fragments of Freedom saw the South Londoners' first tentative step out of the "coffee table" pigeonhole, Charango is the sound of them relaxing, infusing influences such as hip-hop, country, and cinematic scores into a joyous blend of humor, romance, and soothing melancholy. Vintage moments like the lush lethargy of "Slow Down" and the string-laden single "Otherwise" share space with interesting collaborations. Lambchop frontman Kurt Wagner lends his achingly emotive vocal to "What New York Couples Fight About," while Slick Rick's dulcet tones flow through "Women Lose Weight," a tongue-in-cheek tale of a husband driven to murder by his overweight wife. Adventurous and inspired yet dripping with Morcheeba's trademark languid rhythms and tranquil melodies, Charango is at the very least a return to form and arguably their best work to date. --Christopher Barrett

Good music but seller never shipped it!
This music is exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, the seller never got around to shipping it, so I got a full refund from Amazon. I later bought the CD from another Amazon seller. % stars for the music though.

Fairly good, uneven, some weird musical decisions
There is some choice 'cheeba here, particularly the first three tunes and "Public displays of Affection," which are what get this 3 stars from me. Unfortunately, Morcheeba made the decision to bring in several ringers, whose results take this exemplary trip-hop band very far away from from its best form. Really, does a song like "What New York Couples Fight About" fit into this musical context? It's way too theatrical. Embarrassing to have on the auto CD player. No groove, and an enervated Bryan Ferry wannabe lead vocalist usurping Sky's seat. Probably the worst offender is "Women Lose Weight" which actually makes me laugh through the insouciance of Slick Rick, but is really not PC at all. ;)This CD shows little staying power, and is not even close to Big Calm in consistency. I hope Morcheeba cuts back on the guest vocalist habit, because in all cases it's been tried, the experiment's a failure.

THE TRACK SLOW DOWN MADE ME BUY THIS!!!!
I heard the song "Slow Down" by Morcheeba in Fye and decided to buy the album on Amazon since they didn't have it at Fye(go figure). The only song I didn't like is "Women Lose Weight" f/Slick Rick. I like Rick The Ruler, but this song seems a lil ignorant. I was trying to pick up the abstract aspect of it, but uhhhh.... NO. All the other tracks I loved as much as I love "Slow Down". A must have if you need to mellow out or get all artsy-fartsy. Highly recommend.

OK folks this album gets 5 stars. the songs are unique gems with unexpected turns. This album has been stored in my soul since i first heard it in 2005 and it has kept its promise of being a work of art.

Just as good as the second CD.
I listened to this CD yesterday morning and I have to say that I liked it. It's relaxing, humorous, and nonchalant. The first song "Slow Down" I imagine myself wearing a white cotton dress lying on a couch relaxing, not letting anything bother me. That is how this song is. Soothing.

a little too laid back...
I must say that after writing all praising reviews for the other 3 outstanding albums from this coolest of bands then I looked forward to 'Charango' with baited breath, sadly this is a bit more passive than I hoped for. Where are the killer catchy chorus's and the trance like vocals - they seem to be over-produced to the point that the dreamy talents of Skye don't flow, for me, on any of the tracks compared to the other albums!!The collaborations are more prominent here than even Fragments especially (although Fragments does have a few out of place tracks) - the most noteable being the Slick Rick (last seen with Doug E Fresh in the 80's lol!), while he remains a good rapper and the track is good it detracts from Morcheeba's base trippy sound. The vfm aspect of it is fantastic and the bonus cd is a good touch. Overall there are no tracks which equal the stylishness and have the hook of tracks like "Trigger Hippies", "Tape Loop", "A Little Understanding" etc, etc, basically the other 3 albums, tracks you cant get out of you're head once they are in there!!!.I am afraid that while Morcheeba must be commended for trying to move into other areas of the vast influences they seem to draw from (Jazz, funk, rap, hip hop etc) with this album - its all a little too placid for me and nothing really sticks out to make you want to play this to death. If you want to get into the best band on earth then start with the other 3 albums.
