For their fourth album, the band dropped the "Sound System" from its name and became known simply as Afro Celts. In interviews, Simon explained that the collective had evolved into a true band, and as such the "Sound System" moniker - which implies DJs and samples to the exclusion of musicians and instruments - no longer applied. Still, reviewers' suggestions that the band had "gone acoustic" or that it had lost its interest in keyboards and beats were wildly overblown. To be sure, there is great emphasis on song craft and diverse instrumentation on Seed, but the programmed beats and ambient textures that marked the band's earlier efforts have not been eliminated altogether. Even the largely acoustic "Ayub's Song/As You Were" contains keyboard playing by Simon. In keeping with the "band" feel, Seed places a heavier emphasis on live bass (both acoustic and electric) and gives Johnny's, N'Faly's and Moussa's percussion greater prominence in the mix. The band lineup for Seed includes Simon Emmerson, James McNally, Iarla O'Lionaird (whose vocals are given much greater prominence than on the band's previous efforts), Martin Russell, N'Faly Kouyate, Myrdhin, Mass, Johnny Kalsi, Moussa Sissokho, and Emer Mayock.

Debatably my favorite release of theirs...
This might be my favorite of theirs, it's a tough call between this and Volume III for me. Highly recommended for dance of danceable and enchanting World and Electronic music.

Top 5 CD on my playlist
Afrocelts have an amazing sound quality - polyrhythms and bagpipes never sounded so good together. Music is trancy, trippy, dancable, inspiring, beautiful, and uplifting, all in a very fun & integrated way. I just bought a copy for my mom for Christmas. She's going to love it as much as I do... very intergenerational for people who appreciate high-quality, complex, intense, but beautiful music.

Not as strong as Volume 3, but still a good album.
I didn't like this as much as Further in Time, though there's a lot of echos of their earlier work here and there. Too much electronics in a few places. But overall this was recognizably Afrocelt and I expect it will grow on me more with continued listening the way their earlier albums did.

Die gezähmten Afrocelts
Nach drei phänomenalen Vorgängern hat es Seed nicht so ganz leicht, denn eigentlich ist es im Vergleich ein etwas unspektakuläres Album geworden, das keine grossen Innovationen mit sich bringt. Nein, die Afrocelts haben in ihren ersten Alben noch mehr an ihrem Stil gefeilt und sind nun in ihrer Nische angekommen. Nicht unbedingt ein Nachteil!Das Album läuft in ruhigeren Bahnen, als noch sein Vorgänger und so klingen die Techno-Tribes und Trip-Hop-Elemente hier etwas besänftigter. Da bleibt auch schon mal Zeit für eine kleine nette Folk-Session, wie auf Ayubs's Song. Das Gefüge der einzelnen Songs ist besser auf einander abgestimmt und wird von einer in Variationen wiederkehrenden Rhytmic wie ein roter Faden zusammengehalten.Der Gastsänger Mundy, ist ein irisches Rauhbein und erinnert mich ein wenig(!) an Bryan Adams. Auf "Rise Above it" klingt er zunächst etwas ungelenk, aber spätestens beim Refrain passt dann irgendwie doch alles gut zusammen, und so werden die 10 Minuten des Tracks immer interessanter, für mich der interessanteste Song auf Seed.Nethermore ist dagegen ein sehr eingängiges poppiges Duett zwischen Nina Miranda (mit eine sexy Hauchstimme) und Iarla, geht gut ins Ohr ist aber im Vergleich zu einem "Release" vergangener Tage kein absoluter Meilenstein.Iarla, auf diesem Album vielleicht nicht ganz in Höchstform liefert in "All Remains" einen eigentlich wunderbaren Song, an dem nur der Refrain etwas "vegeigt" ist.N'Faly Kouyate singt den Titelsong, einen Ohrwurm in dem die Afrocelts mit einer Slideguitar überraschen. Instrumentale Kostbarkeiten finden sich auf diesem Album eigentlich immer wieder, z.B. in der zweiten Hälfte des Openers "Cyberia" mit einer Flamenco-Einlage, die perfekt in den Afrocelt-Sound eingebunden wird. Instrumentales Highlight ist für mich "Deep Channel" mit einem so typischen Mix aus treibenden Rhytmen und superschönen relaxten folkigen Passagen.Wie gesagt ist Seed etwas unscheinbarer ausgefallen. Das Album läuft gefällig in etwas gemässigteren Bahnen durch, ohne grosse Überraschungen zu liefern. Trotzdem: diese Band gehört für mich immer noch zu den orignellsten Formationen im heutigen Musikmarkt und auch dieses Album liefert einen erneuten Beweis dafür.
