I use this board on a slanted table. The fabric that it's covered in keeps the pieces from sliding down.

This board can't be wood. It's too light. That's one of the thinks I like about it. It's the perfect size for puzzles up to 1500 pieces, it's light weight, it's covered in a material that has a nap to it so the pieces don't slide down.

Q: Are the sorting trays sturdy enough to piece together small sections of the puzzle on the trays? How does this case compare to the Jigsort case?

I do not have a jigsort so I cannot answer that part of your question. but the sorting trays are definitely sturdy enough to put together sections of the puzzle.

Q: Would a puzzle (finished dimensions 39x13) fit in it?

No, it wouldn’t. I measured the inside tray and it’s only 36 inches wide.
