Will these blades work for cutting a railroad tie?

Yes. I have used blades like these on a corded recip saw to cut creosote treated oak ties. Buy the correct length for your ties. 9" is probably too short. Buy plenty, they will dull quickly. However, it beats the heck out of ruining a $400 chainsaw.
