Important to move the unit around
Have been using the unit for over three weeks. I believe I made the right choice buying a desiccant unit. The main reason is that unless you only have concerns about the humidify in one room, otherwise it is necessary to move the unit around. The humidity monitor only shows the humidity in one room, but aren't all rooms connected? If the dehumidifier is fixed at one place, the only mechanism to pull the moisture from the other rooms is air circulation. With all the doors and long hallways, it takes a long time and a lot of energy to pull the air. Moreover, the moisture is not only in the air, but also in the surroundings! For example, the humidity in a bedroom is not only reflected in the air of the bedroom, but also in the floor, the walls, the ceilings, the furniture, the bedding, and even the clothes in the closets! Sucking the moisture from all these surroundings by a dehumidifier placed in the living room will take a long time (weeks) and burn a lot of electricity. It's much more efficient to move the dehumidifier from one room to the other. This is exactly what happened: for the first week, I left the dehumidifier running on high for hours, and the humidity barely nudged one point. But after I rotated the humidifier around the house for a week, now it only takes 30 minutes to see a drastic change of humidity (65% to 53%) in 30 minutes. A 15 pound desiccant unit is much easier to move around than a 50 pound refrigerative unit. In summary:Pros:1. Light weight, easier to be moved around. To me this is the most important feature;2. Not too loud. I have never owned a refrigerative unit, can't compare the noise level. But when the fan speed is low, the noise doesn't bother me at all;3. Mechanically simple, fewer components. Hopefully it is less likely to have problems (of course it depends on the quality of parts and the workmanship). The unit is made in China. From outside it looks fine. Only time can tell how reliable it is.Cons:1. Relatively more expensive than a refrigerative unit. Guess everything has a price.More notes:1. On paper its capacity is less than a refrigerative unit ( only 22 pints vs 70 pints per day). However the dehumidifying capacity of a refrigerative unit depends on the temperature and humidify, and degrades drastically when the operating condition deviates from the ideal temperature and humidify levels, while a desiccant unit does not suffer from this problem.2. No build-in humidity monitor. To me this is not a big deal, just buy a stand-alone monitor. The plus side is that you can place the stand-alone monitor anywhere in the room (away from dehumidifier) to get a better reading throughout the room.

Great for cold storage location
I have a section of my basement that is not temperature controlled. In the winter the excess moisture would freeze and thaw all fall and spring. this caused a lot of excess water. It would drip on my head as I walked through.I've had a standard condensing dehumidifier running for a few years. The effectiveness of the standard condensing dehumidifiers drops off quickly as the temp drops. I've basically have been throwing money out the windows in electric. Two days after I installed this Desiccant Dehumidifier it was bone dry at 34 degrees F. that was impossible before. The water bucket is really small but I drain it directly into the slab tile tray on the edge. I have no need for the bucket. It is also quieter then the other, but that doesn't really matter to me. It in a non living area.I only knocked off the 1 start because of the bucket. It's too small and hard to remove/reinstall. Not an issue for me, but might be for you.

Quiet, does the job well!
I had a normal Zenith de-humidifier that worked well to de-humidify (30pts/day). So I was skeptical to use a desiccant system. But this thing is GREAT! The low setting is incredibly quiet (kind of like a small hand fan). But turning the fan to High speed, is a bit loud (less than my AC unit) and not quiet enough for "quiet" sleep. But turning it to the lowest setting (target is below 35% RH) at low fan, helps keep the humidity low overnight! The air is warm, as expected from a dehumidifier, but it's dry.My window AC that supposedly has a Dry setting (LG 10,000 BTU) for my master bedroom (yes, overkill), only brings the RH down to 50% at 74F. But now when it's even 74F I'm getting 42%. May not sound much but to my wife from California, it feels DRY. And that's what matters.I mainly want dry to get rid of bugs in the apartment since they are attracted to humidity. This is the answer!!I purposely got the 21 pint, because I wanted the room to dry fast. I would get another, because all my portable units (LG, Whynter) do well to cool, but humidity is still an issue. So it's cold and humid.. But this baby will make it dry, and so my temperature doesn't have to be as low.
