Alcoholic ex-soldier Ava Faulkner (Jessica Chastain) came home to Boston for the first time in eight years, attempting to make amends with her estranged sister (Jess Weixler), mother (Geena Davis), and ex (Common). Unfortunately, work commitments kept getting in the way... and when you're a contract assassin, the clientele has dangerous ways of showing their impatience. Stylish actioner co-stars Colin Farrell, John Malkovich, Joan Chen, Ioan Gruffudd. 96 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English.

Its a good flick but...
while Jessica Chastain looks like she can handle herself in a fight, and the action sequences are not over the top, any trained professionals would have shot her from the get go, instead they close the gap, where she can over power, and kill them. It got to the point of ridiculous when the "Agency" decides to get rid of her by sending another agent to kill her during a "mugging" with a knife. Why not just shoot her, don't muggers have guns? How about blow up her car...In a nutshell it lacks the realism/gritness to draw you in like La Femme Nikita (which it was obviously based on) but its not so over the top that your brain checks out like watching John Wick, so you are constantly second guessing the movie.

Even good actors can make bad choices.
Lots of respect for Jessica Chastain. John Malkovich is a good actor. But really, could either go toe to toe with Colin Farrell for more than one swing? The answer is no, and those were important parts of the movie, and I could not suspend my disbelief. The basic premise, that Chastain is one of those highly trained, unstoppable assassins so frequently seen on screen, is not original. The twist is that she plays a recovering addict with trust issues. I guess "the organization", which has trained killers everywhere (don't they all?) just can't find anyone they can control. So they have kept her on. The difficulty comes from the daytime soap-level personal drama that all international assassins carry around. Perhaps the clarification of the family drama was left in the cutting room, and perhaps the concepts looked better on the page, but this movie never really comes together. I did enjoy the performances of Joan Chen and Geena Davis.

good
The story had a lot of depth, the characters were well rounded, and over all the movie was well executed.

We Need an AVA 2
Really enjoyed this movie which really surprised me since I'm not really a Jessica Chastain. But I guess I am now because she did good playing her character. Disliked Gina Davis in her role because she was so cruel. But am a fan of Davis. After the movie was over, I looked, hoped there was a part 2 or one in the works. Said the ratings weren't very good so most likely there won't be a 2. So disappointed because I'd love to see Jessica's character take out Colin's characters adult daughter. Good movie and action packed.
