Neil Peart - A Work in Progress

Best drummer book ever
It's hard to imagine that a drummer that good was in a constant state of self-improvement. He always thought he could get better which in turn inspires others who think they are the best to take a step back and realize that there is always room for improvement. Very inspirational in his thinking and his writing can be a little painful to read now that he's gone. I read it twice and it's on the rotation to be read about once a year now. Same with other Neil Peart books. Talks a lot about drums and life but there was some real struggles in his life that he shares that has helped others. Lot of life lessons can be gleaned from reading Neil parts work.

One of the best music instruction videos... for any instrument
This video is so good, this is a second copy replacing my lost first copy. It is a drum video and is focused on that, but, shockingly, Neil's insights into music in general make this a worth while buy for any guitarist. Any musician really. Also any Rush fan that loves Test for Echo needs this, complete breakdown and dissection of that album. And if you are a drummer? Stop reading this review and buy it!The Professor may be gone, but he kindly left a very nice curriculum for us to continue study on our own. Man, it's been 8 months or so, and writing about Neil in the past tense still hurts...

Learned a lot of great techniques from this video.
Learned a lot of great techniques from this video. One of the great masters of the art of percussion. This will excel you if you are an already descent drummer. If you are a fan of the musical group Rush or just a drummer who wishes to polish your technique and broaden you abilities then this is a must have.

Masterpiece!
I was captivated and completely enthralled when I first bought and watched this masterpiece. It is well over 2 and 1/2 hours of pure amazement and wonder. Neil as I expected is an excellent teacher and does a wonderful job explaining each song in beautiful detail and example. Every song from Test For Echo is played by Neil and afterwards he explains the major parts of the song and explains the what and whys of why he did what he was trying to accomplish through his drum parts. Neil plays the drums to backing tracks sans drums and he is just such a master at the art of drumming. The majority of the video takes place inside a studio, but he is shown out in nature, rowing a boat, walking through snow in snowshoes and is even shown on a back porch demonstrating how he warms up on a practice pad. Nature is used to explain his new techinique by speaking in terms of roundness. His drum study with drum guru Fred Gruber is gone over in great detail and Neil talks of how a new approach of drumming was taken on. A definite must have!

A great add to my library
It's Neil Pert what else to say. He goes through many aspects of musical drumming. Composition, physical, and mind set. A must have for any drummer at any skill level.

Neil Peart - Genius
I have been a fan of Rush and by inclusion each member of the band. After watching these videos I really gained a new found respect for this man who has turned percussion into an art form unlike other drummers before him. I know that that is high praise indeed but after watching two videos of his I know now a little bit more about the music of Rush and the mind of a master of his craft. If you are a true drummer, watch this video. He as much to teach, to all of us, musician and fan alike.

Great addition to any drummer's riff learning arsenal.
Neil Peart - A Work in Progress Great instructional video! True, it is for a slightly older work, but many of the riffs are still in use, and are broken down to make them easier to understand, practice, and play along. The historical significance of some of the riffs are discussed which adds to the overall value of the experience.

Intelligent, considered, interesting - and that's just the talking parts!
This is an insightful lesson on drumming from one of the greatest drummers ever. This is not a lesson for beginners, nor is it a lesson for know-alls. I don't play drums yet still took a lot away from this to apply to my own musical explorations. This DVD bears repeated viewings. If you don't want to listen to what the man says then fine - move onto the drumming parts. Even the cheapest DVD players have useful little buttons that allow you to do this easily.Neil Peart has lead an inspirational life both inside and outside of music. He has struggled through unimaginable hardship and pain with honesty, and deserves compassion, respect and admiration. On a purely financial level, a DVD release such as this will cost Neil far more than it would ever make for him. His only motivation is to reach out to you with his music: he is truly speaking from his heart. You can only learn if you can listen. This man is a great teacher. All musicians are lucky that he chooses to share his deep musical knowledge with us.It is galling indeed that people who bang a few things in their spare time before getting back to their day job could talk of discouraging such selfless charitable behaviour. It is easy to be dismissive and judgemental. As Neil himself says: "Take the high road."

Absolutely had to get my hands on this after Neil's passing!!
I bought the original VHS back in the day but after Neil's untimely passing, I panicked when I couldn't find it (still can't) so was glad to finally get a copy on DVD. :)Any true Rush fan will want to add this to their collection. More importantly, any drummer influenced by Neil's playing will want this. For starters, it was his very first instructional video which I'm sure he'd been pestered for years to do and he discusses how A Work In Progress came to fruition.Secondly, it reflects a pivotal time in his playing where he changed his technique as well as his drum set up which he pretty much carried on with for years to come.More importantly, it's a reflection in time and a small glimpse into Neil's genius, captured and referenced for years to come for any aspiring drummers, musicians, and fans alike.
