Simple but lots of embedded chances for learning!
I absolutely LOVE this book!!! It is such a refreshing representation of seasons, science, nature, and the world around us. I have used it the last couple years to talk about various things with my students. It fit perfectly this past week when we were talking about Earth Day and the amazing marvels of nature. I have also used this book to teach adjectives and descriptive words in writing because it has so many opportunities for discussion around describing objects in unique ways.As the title eludes to, this book is all about things in nature that are round. From shells on snails and turtles, to snake spirals, to the glow around firefly, the author, Jennifer Ward, depicts many of the ways we can observe roundness around us. Another component of this book, that I didn't notice until reading it a second time, is how the story progresses through a year and through a day at the same time. The book starts in the spring and progresses through each season. With each season, Ward represents various things that are round in that season. For example, in the fall she shows leaves twirling around and in the winter she shows a snowman with a round body. This was a really fun way to show the seasons and talk about them, without it being a book explicitly about seasons. The story also progresses through the day. Starting in the morning and ending at night with a round moon up in the sky. The very final page zooms out to show our solar system and all the round planets within it.I was so impressed by this book, because initially, it seems relatively simple, but the closer you look you realize how much has gone into each page and how many opportunities for learning and discussion there are on each page. With each page, Ward uses creative and unique adjectives to describe the objects. For example, she uses words like dripping, dome, violent, stow, and cling. As a teacher, these opened up great conversations about vocabulary and descriptive words. The illustrations, by Lisa Congdon, beautifully compliment the words. They are colorful, clean, and engaging and add the perfect pictures to bring the words to life.I highly recommend this book for a wide range of readers!
