Skin Game

James Garner had long excelled as a western star and favorite, among television and movie fans.From the Maverick television series, to western movie comedies such as, "Support Your Local Gunfighter", and "Support Your Local Sheriff", James Garner had to have been on a 'very' short list of Hollywood actors that could had made these characters what the writer intended them to be."Skin Game" is a another of those comedic movies that James Garner had made bigger than life, and another movie that no one other than James Garner could had played in that staring role.Skin Game is a virtually unknown movie, 'possibly because' of the subject matter of the movie. But this is, 'just a movie', meant to entertain viewers, and certainly not intended to be taking on any social or political views, or any historical facts.It's simply and strictly a comedic movie, again meant to entertain viewers, and that's exactly what it does. If you see it in that light, you will definitely enjoy this move!5 stars for the movie itself, '1 star' for thr DVD and packaging!There should be 'rules', (actually 'laws'), when licenses are granted out to re-distribute a film!This was re-released with no subtitles, (not even 'English', for the hearing impared), no special features, and virtually, 'no menu'. The only option, 'play movie'.Surely, it could had been done much better!

Well written with good performances by all. A little tedious in places but overall a good movie.

The story is set in 1857. Just as well, this information was offered on screen in the opening scene (a typo in the movie's blurb notes reads 1875). Fortunately for quality control, the on-screen presentation was flawless in all respects; the DVD played flawlessly.

One of my personal top 50 movies of all time that I had special ordered from Warner's custom pressing service. Ithad a good (Cinemascope) picture (with good color) but muddied sound and no subtitles. So I hoped this regularissue would correct these problems and probably add some extras. It was discouraging to find none of the defects had been corrected----not only that, but the video transfer isterrible; washed out color and video a 1.2 zoom of the original with information missing from the sides. If you want to do this, you can do it with your DVD players remote. So I kept my old copy and deep-sixed the new one. This is a great movie. It's a western/comedy/romance/morality play all in one, and does justice to them all,plus it's James Garner at his best. It cries out for a blu-ray treatment. How about a box set with the two SupportYour Local movies and Murphy's Romance, Jim's only Academy Award nomination. Sign me up!

another top end warner bros archive release,widescreen is 2.41,just about as good as blu ray and nice mono sound,anyone still thinking of taking the plunge on these dvd-r disc`s,do so,I have now bought about half a dozen movie`s like this and all are as good as the real thing,most are hard to get film`s only before on stone age vhs or private colector dvd-r`s,which are recorded of tv etc,these are proper released dvd`s,but pricey due to small print run,garner made about 3 or 4 comedy western`s which are all worth collecting.A bit dated now but you still get a laugh,most are spot the supporting actor who went on to better thing`s as all these movie`s are now heading for 40 years old,great rainny sunday afternoon entertainment go buy now.
