A vital bike device
I have used a Garmin Varia RVR315 for about 10 years. Sadly, the lifetime shortens over time (as do I - nearly 90!) and now it loses its connection to my WAHOO ELEMENT Roam after only 17miles. Reluctantly, I think it’s time to buy a new one. Surprisingly, there seems to be little worthwhile change - I already have a rear light so don’t need that.10 years seems good value. Will I still be riding at 100? Well, Jeanne Calment rode till she was 100 I recall and gave up smoking at 117 ….

it is OK but has too many false negatives
it generally works fine and does what's it's build for BUT i experienced quite a few false negatives on my rides. While false positives are acceptable false negatives are not for safety device like that, I generally get a couple false negatives per ride which in my opinion is to many 1 or 2 would be acceptable but like 5-10 per ride is way too many to consider this reliable for me. To be clear my device is mounted as per instructions so it's not because of that.

It works really well
It connects simultaneously to my Garmin edge mounted on the handlebars, and my mobile phone in my breast pocket. When a vehicle gets within 150 metres of my rear, I get a loud bong from the phone. This draws my attention to the Garmin edge which shows the vehicles approaching from the rear. It shows one or more and the distance between them, in graphical form. When turning right, if there is nothing on the display, no need to look behind. This is impossible on my recumbent anyway. Some spurious signals in town traffic, but once on the open road is very reliable. Best bike safety device I have ever bought. April 2022.
