King Crimson , are they the best ? Many do think so ...
While Epitaph 1 & 2 are extremely fine recordings of material performed in November and December 1969 . Volumes 3 & 4 are drawn from UK performances in August and September respectively of that year ...It is a wonderful idea that DGM decided to release these preformances , as that undescribable and brilliant KC lineup from that year will always need as clear as possible description and breakdown of what happened ...I - as many other Crimson fan - have read up on their career , and when this portion of the KC work and output is described one cannot but be happy that all members whom where there , gave their all for that albums' sake , which has people still to this day 44 years later . Admiring the whole Fripp - McDonald - Giles - Lake Project ...They were one of the two bands that year whom took on the road a Mellotron - I think the Moody blues were the other . The absolute brilliance of the group that melded for the album and performing dates that year .Just as any of the other 2 or 3 Crimson units from the 70 s are brilliant . The painful departures of Michael Giles and Greg Lake are felt to this day by fans ...The level of Improv were present , extremely qualitative and powerful in the 69 - 74 KC , but Get thy bearings and Drop in from the 2nd disc Chesterfield Café are probably one of the 5 or 6 best Improvs I ve Heard by them musicianship wise and sound quality wise .I wish this lineup would ve had another 3 or 4 years to express their talent and genuine blend of UK 70s rock . But that's why we have to focus on that short period's genious that was that great lineup of KC ...

Wonderful snapshot of the Crim's of that era
As a snapshot of this moment in the great King Crimson's life this is an excellent album. The sound quality is pretty good considering the era, obviously not as good as the 198os or 90s live recording but not as poor as Earthbound (official live album)The impact of this band at the time was simply stunning, I keep having to remind myslef of how their sound was just unlike anything else before. There are very few bands who have lasted so long (albeit with big gaps in the middle and major personnel changes)and remained true to their music. Clearly Robert Fripp is has always been the ultimate poer in this band an it is his determination not to compromise that has marked themout as a constant and singular voice in rock music.I would also recommend (clearly every other King Crimson studio album and all the live stuff, but note caution about the poor sound quality on Earthbound)the 21st Century Schizoid Band's Live in the City album, this is Crimson without Fripp doing the songs that King Crimson do not play anymore.
