First Impressions: Photos and Reflections of a Danube River Cruise

My wife and I will be going with friends on a Danube River cruise and this book seemed perfect to read before our trip. There is some descriptive prose (some more than others) about each stop or sight along the cruise with each followed by pages of photos (not identified) by the author. I noticed that the book could have used better editing- e.g. on pg 5? (after pg 4 no pages are numbered) the 4th paragraph down begins with “is served with a small glass of water”. As the next sentence is about coffee, I assume the first half sentence describes coffee being served with a glass of water. The many photo pages contain 2 or 3 photos each and a couple of the pages have duplicate photos. None of the pictures have descriptions. Overall, if you’re going on a Danube River cruise, you probably will enjoy looking at the photos and reading the author’s descriptions but you’ll just have to overlook the book’s shortcomings as described.

I ordered and read this book before our trip and then read it again after arriving home. It is an incredible summary, with wonderful suggestions of ways to add your own extensions on your trip, and the photos were excellent reminders of the things we saw in such a brief period of time. The trip goes by so fast and there is so much to see! I have lots of photos but I couldn’t remember where I was until I went back to this book. If you take this river cruise, I definitely suggest you buy this book before you go.

The author had an almost negative tone throughout the whole book. I got the feeling he didn't enjoy his trip. Would've liked to have had identifying locations and names to the photos.

With a Viking Cruise coming up in a few months, I just wanted to get some ideas as to what we should expect on our journey. This book was a good pictorial introduction as to what we might expect in our travels!

I have been on this Viking River Cruise during the Christmas Markets and I am going again. I enjoyed seeing the familiar places again and the many photos are very well done. I will take this book with me on my next trip there and take advantages of his suggestions of things to see and do. Thank you, Mr. Jacobson!
