Bought my first at a garage sale for next to nothing. After using it once, I threw away my old zester which was awful. Have since gifted it to quite a few friends and family members. In addition to zesting citrus, which it does beautifully, it's also good for finely shredding hard cheeses like Parmesan and for grating garlic.

I don't often write reviews, but this thing inspired me to. I read other reviews that said they didn't miss the handle, so I took a chance. I admit that it required a little creativity to figure out the best grip for my hand personally, but the joyful part came when I slid a fresh chunk of pecorino romano down the length of this very sharp tool to then watch the snowfall of fine, soft cheese float down to the waiting porcelain collection dish. So easy, so efficient.And made in America, baby! Excellent quality. I might actually score a bunch for Christmas prezzies...

My sister convinced me to buy this grater because I use alot of hard cheeses and zest citrus in my cooking. I didn't really think my original grater was an issue but my sister INSISTED it would change my life. And... it kinda has. Haha! I think the life-changing bit is the amount and quickness of the grating PLUS the ease of cleanup is what has compelled me to even admit this microplane grater is, indeed, greater. Enjoy!

This is way better than an old style traditional rasp for trimming animal hooves. This shaves away hoof wall with ease.

Microplane graters are terrific, full stop.I own two others with black plastic handles, which I use constantly (for citrus zest, garlic, ginger, butter, cheese, etc.); but the chunky handles take up drawer space, so this model seemed the perfect spare for when the other two were in the dishwasher. (Hey, I cook a lot.)Unfortunately, the protective cover curled up lengthwise in the dishwasher, becoming too narrow and extremely tight, such that, if you are able to force the grater into the cover, the grater's sides actually slice into the plastic guide rails, creating plastic shavings. The covers on the other two that I own are constructed differently of heavier weight plastic and have been through the dishwasher countless times with no such problem, but I should not have assumed this cover would be the same.Please don't make the same mistake I did: HAND WASH THE COVER. The product description for this model is careful to say that the grater, itself (no mention of the cover), can be washed in the dishwasher, so it isn't as if couldn't have known.👉 Note to Microplane: absolutely would be ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ with a dishwasher safe cover that retained its shape.

Great microplaner, and am grateful for the cover to protect both blades and hands in the utensil drawer.

I purchased the same thing about 30 years ago when the plane made the transition from carpentry to kitchen - it cost me $30 in those days and after so many years of use and abuse it finally was time to replace it - this one is exactly the same thing as the one of 30 years ago, just at 1/3 of price - what a bargain!There are many shapes and sizes but this is the original, perfect for hard cheese, nuts, garlic, onion and so many others ... easy to wash, no cuts from the sides and no aromas left behind - Microplane is still THE grater to buy and from them all, this simple one is the most multi purpose and best value out there ... enjoyUpdate July 18-2018: I noticed that few from the reviews have been disappointed from a lack of a handle. This design is best if the grater is placed flat on top of a bowl, plate, etc.; This way you have best position for grating (the most force without pushing hard) and the safest for your fingers. I do have a few with handles but those need to be either hand held or leaning on something (the cutting board, plate, etc.) which means I grate with my arm at an angle, my arm gets tired, I need to push more that I should which means that I could get nipped by the grates - so I love the simple and safe design
