Forget the 5 year guarantee. In practice you'll get about a year.
Amazon asks for a review a couple of days after you have received the product. Even a couple of months afterwards would be of no use for a product such as this. What the buyer needs to know is does the paint work? Can the 5 year guarantee be relied on? And the sort answer is 'No'.I painted my cars wheel rims with Hammerite smooth silver paint at about this time last year. Yes, it paints on well. Yes it looks good immediately afterwards. But does it work? Is it guaranteed for, as it states on the tin, 5 years? No, it most certainly doesn't / isn't. It doesn't even last one winter! Hammerite is not alone in the stable of so called 'rust proofing' paints that doesn't work. Indeed, I have yet to find any that does, and so repainting of both my cars wheel rims and bodywork seems to be a yearly ritual. I do wonder where and how manufactures test these products - no doubt is sheltered environment of a laboratory, rather than actually out on the road, which is where their product is going to be used, what it is going to experience. Conclusion; forget the 5 year guarantee. In practice you'll get about a year.

Matt silver
I wanted battleship grey to repaint an old workshop vice dating back to the second world war (presumably when that was one of only a few colours readily available) that I am restoring. Silver was the nearest Hammerite do, so it was Hobson's choice. The paint has a metallic base and as such is difficult to get an even finish with no brush marks and I will probably have to do two coats. It dries matt and therefore looks like light grey but it also looks like it needs a coat of laquer, so I'm not sure it was a good choice. Only time will tell how it wears but I'm not expecting it to do particularly well.

What’s happened to Hammerite? Awful to apply, poor quality finish and not remotely silver
Applies like treacle so streaks immediately and hardens almost on contact. The silver is a dull grey and isn’t remotely metallic either . I have used Hammerite in the past to restore a garden table for the garden back to its former glory and that was a joy to work with. For this project (2021) I have given up with the Hammerite, instead I have Rustoleum’s spray chrome paint which has provided a meticulous finish, not this treacle garbage. I shall avoid Hammerite from now on

Covered rust well and so far still looks great
After removing the worst of the rust, we painted over the rest and it covered really well. The paint is a good consistency and appears to provide a seal around the bumpy parts of the metal. It leaves a nice finish as you can see from the photo. It's now 3 months since we painted and there are still no signs at all of any rust breaking through. So this was a nice cheap way of extending the life of our shelving.

High quality silver rust paint
really nice quality silver paint and with the added benefit of being rust preventative which allows you to paint the paint straight onto bare trust rather than having to protect the rust first. The silver colour is really nice and it really blends beautifully after the paint strokes have been applied but it takes time for it to dry. Have used this in the bathroom where it gets very damp and a bathroom bath feet started to corrode. Highly recommend this and have no issues with hammerite in general
