Affordable mini pocket camera for everyday use
Hubby and I enjoy traveling and taking pictures/videos a lot so we got the DJI Osmo Pocket a year ago to take with us pretty much everywhere we go. It is small and does not take up much space so it was a good device to add to our collection of photography/videography equipment. Quality of picture and videos were both excellent. Due to its small size, it was so much easier to hold this in our hand while chasing around our little kids. Until recently, we discovered the release of the Feiyu Pocket camera and thought we give this a try to compare with the DJI Osmo Pocket. Right off the bat, the first thing we noticed is the PRICE! It was much more affordable than the DJI Osmo Pocket. But this was not the only thing that caught our attention. Here are some observations. What’s in the box/Appearance/Size:The box comes with the case (very similar to the DJI Osmo Pocket), wrist strap, USB-C cable, manual, and Pocket camera. The Feiyu Pocket camera is small, similar in size and weight to the DJI Osmo Pocket. The front device has a touch screen so you can swipe back and forth, right below the screen is the record button and the mode switch selector, the power button on/off on the side, and on the reverse side is the usb-c charging port and towards the bottom is the micro sd port (which can handle micro-sd cards up to 512GB (compared to the 256GB limit by Osmo pocket). On the bottom is the 1/4-20″ tripod socket, which the DJI Osmo Pocket does not have. This is a great addition here so you don’t need to buy additional mount. The settings layout on the touch screen of the Feiyu Pocket is very similar to the DJI Osmo Pocket so this familiarity helps us with navigation through the settings easily.Viewing and accessing content:The Feiyu Pocket comes with built-in Wi-Fi and has iOS and Android (FeiyuCam App) for previewing, remote controlling and editing of your footage. And you don’t need to keep the Wi-Fi on the entire time so you won’t drain the battery life, but once you open up the app and turn on the Wi-Fi on the Pocket, it will immediately try to connect. So no need to purchase additional modules for that. Osmo Pocket does not have this feature, unfortunately. The feature allows for quick access to viewing your content from the camera and downloading to your phone. Another great feature is you can control the gimbal by moving your smartphone once Wi-Fi is enabled. This feature was quite nice and our kids thought it was really cool when we showed them.Image/Video quality/Stabilization/Sound:The screen on the Feiyu Pocket is bigger than the Osmo Pocket, but the color of the image is actually brighter on the Osmo Pocket. The color quality on the Feiyu Pocket seems to have a darker tone. But if this is not a big concern, you can always use photo editing software to correct the color to your liking. The picture quality also has a softer look on details, so if this is your preference, that’s great. The DJI Osmo Pocket does offer more sharpness on this aspect. With the Feiyu Pocket, you can record videos with maximum of 4K at 60Frames per second, slow motion up to 120fps in Full HD. The stabilization on the Feiyu Pocket although good and decent, it jerks/shakes a little as movement is increased and quality suffers a little in low light scene. However, with the wide angle lens, this makes it really good for vlogging. As far as sound, the DJI Osmo Pocket does have a better quality than the Feiyu Pocket. It sounded a little soft on the Feiyu Pocket. On a side note, we got lens filters for DJI OSMO Pocket to play around before, however, we haven’t tested these filters with the Feiyu Pocket so not sure if they are compatible. It would be interesting to see how the quality would compare if we use the filters. So this will be our next project to test.Overall, we were quite impressed with the Feiyu Pocket camera, especially with these four standout points: 1) Wifi connectivity, 2) 1/4-20” screw tripod socket on the bottom, 3) wider angle field of view (120° against the 80° of the Osmo), and 4) battery life (can last between 3-4 hours of shooting). If you’re tight on budget but still want a good small pocket camera that can capture decent pictures and video, Feiyu Pocket is a good alternative option. Although there are certain things the Feiyu Pocket can be improved, it is definitely one piece of device to consider having for everyday use for making short videos or capturing images. For me, price also plays an important point so with this price point versus the DJI Osmo pocket price, if I had to choose before, I would favor the Feiyu Pocket. But that does not matter now because we have both. When we’re out, our kids always take over our phones to play games or watch videos, so having a mini pocket camera with us all the time is very convenient.

An interesting high-tech device with somewhat limited utility
A good quality/price ratio:PROS:1. Really compact and weights only 115 grams!2. Plenty of possibilities3. 4K as well as 60 frames per second available4. Acceptable gimbal stabilization5. Large battery6. Possible wi-fi connection to an external mobile phone (through Feiyu free application)7. Good quality of manufacturingCONS:1. Bad movie quality if no generous sun light is available - due to a small CMOS sensor (but all not camera or camcorder-based gimbals have that)2. Precise shooting is sometimes difficult (except in case of wide plans) - due to a really small size of the screen (unless you connect and use an external mobile phone - instead of device built-in screen)3. Bad quality of recorded soundBe aware you will need to buy an additional SD memory card. Also, an external mobile phone connection will be necessary in case you want to have possibility to personalize some parameters (this is not clearly described in user's manual - example: changing video format from .mov to .mp4).

Not Quite There Yet
I really wanted to like this gimbal camera. I have used GoPros or equivalent for a while now, and am always happy to try out other brands and designs. First, the good - the design is quite easy to use and I like the feel of it in my hand and it's small enough to simply put it in a pocket. It does use USB-C so I didn't have to worry about keeping up with yet more charging cables, which is nice. It uses an SD-Card, which took a few times to seat properly and work properly. What I didn't like - I tried the whole phone connection setup, but it was useless. I'm not sure why they want you to connect the phone that way, but I eventually just gave up. I found the gimbel to be pretty good with stabilization. During use it seemed to lose connection to the sd-card, so I had to re-seat the card again. At this point, I don't really trust it to just "set it and forget it", because it might be working, or it might not, and I'm not willing to worry about it.
