Product description A42-3 .com Cesaria Evora, a Cape Verdean with a rich alto voice, has been described as a cross between Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday. It wasn't until 1988, though, that Evora traveled to Paris to record. Her fourth album, 1992's Miss Perfumado, made her a major star in France and Portugal. Her 1994 album, Cesaria Evora, duplicated that triumph, and it's this latter recording that has become her first U.S. release. Evora, celebrated in Europe as the "Barefoot Diva," is now 52, but she is still able to give every word a breathy intimacy even as she fills it with a pitch-perfect, full-toned resonance. Drawing on the work of top Cape Verdean songwriters Nando Da Cruz, Amandio Cabral, and Manuel De Novas, she sings in Criuolo, a Creole variation of Portuguese. As in Brazil, another former Portuguese colony with a strong African influence, Cape Verde has produced a music that is light and airy even as it incorporates African rhythms and quartertones. The morna possesses the low-key tunefulness of an equatorial cabaret music, but Evora's vocals impart a world-weary gravity to these tales of homesickness and doomed love. --Geoffrey Himes

One of the best CDs I own!
I don't speak Portuguese but the music is so overwhelming and soothing that one doesn't really need to. This was the first CD of the late Mrs. Evora I listened to in early 90s, which introduced me to a new world of music. I have been hooked since.

The root of Evora's greatness
Taking in everything that Cesaria Evora was capable of singing is a daunting task. Whatever stars aligned to turn her into the accidental international celebrity that she became, making her that rare case of a justifiably famous artist, even those rare moments of public visibility still could not show everything that Evora could do. That is to be expected, given the range of styles that combined to form the artistic realm of Cape Verde. Evora was always capable of combining Portuguese influenced folk styles, mid-20th Century American jazz, Afro-Cuban, Parisian jazz, and nearly anything else in a way that was appropriate for a port island’s melting pot of artistic ideas. Yet on this simply self-titled album, as minimally adorned as possible and as focused as possible, one hears merely Cesaria declining to hop from genre to genre as she was wont to do. That melting pot aspect of Cape Verdean styles remains evident throughout, but primarily as a clearly Portuguese derived folk-jazz through which Evora’s clear and inviting vocals come through. In one sense, it could be disappointing for those who wish to hear Evora go from Havana to Paris in the span of a few minutes, but from another perspective, the value of a clear demonstration of why she was so renowned, without need for adornment, comes through. Evora’s voice could work in any city, and one could put her in front of any jazz-trained group, making her about the most versatile jazz singer of her era rather than merely the star of Cape Verde, yet a clear and unpretentious demonstration of that root has value in itself. She would not have risen as she did without the ability to record this kind of album. Her best? Perhaps not, but vital.

Incomparable Cesaria
Oh, Cesaria. That voice. This was my first experience of her, and it was completely by chance. I was looking for something different, grabbed a cd from the world music section in my favourite music store (clearly, this was a while ago), popped the cd in the player and oh my. To call her soulful doesn't come close to the emotion this woman's voice carries, and what a voice. I have since bought "Miss Perfumado", "Cafe Atlantico", "Mar Azul" and "Sao Vicente" where she sings with contemporary artists - I adore the duet with Bonnie Raitt. Bonnie sings as only someone who's lived hard and hurt deeply can, and as she follows Cesaria's words, it's there in her voice. The combination of the two can break your heart. And there's so much more to the album than this one song - it's gorgeous through and through. But as much as I love the other albums, this one remains my favourite. Perhaps it's because it was my first exposure to her, but there seems to be something about it that brings me back time and time again. Give her a try. You won't regret it. She's pure magic.
