A Rare Rothko Treat
I was fortunate enough to have seen this show at Pace Gallery in their huge, spacious multi-room Chelsea location December 2016. I was going to buy this durable, hardbound & large, though quite thin, catalogue while visiting but was short on cash at the moment. So, I bought it the following week from the gallery’s online shop, paid extra for shipping. I can’t remember the exact price but it was definitely more than what you can apparently get it for new ($29.58) from Amazon vendors. It is a great catalogue documenting a great, and what will most certainly come to be, historic show.Dark Palette is a mesmerizing show, as important as any museum show. In fact, there were specially-hired museum guards on site and in every room of the gallery (something I had never seen before). They did not hesitate to ask people to step back from the paintings, all of which were stunning, and rare. Some were from museums on loan, but many were from Rothko's children, Christopher and Kate, on loan and rarely if ever shown.Color reproduction is quite good. Images are large and include a foldout of Rothko’s Seagram’s Mural Section 6. Text includes a personal note from Arne Glimcher and thoughts on their father’s work from both Christopher and Kate. This work is primarily later Rothko though not exclusively. There are numerous paintings from the late 1950’s and some also from the early & mid-1960’s. It is actually astounding how many Rothkos were on exhibit (I counted 19, as reproduced in the catalogue, but could be more). Some notable works were on loan from our finest institutions the National Gallery, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum and Albright-Knox Gallery. For Rothko fans, this is a rare treat and a worthy catalogue.
