This book isn't perfect, and Pearson's method of Trad Craft is not ...
As far a classics of Traditional Witchcraft go, this is definitely a tome that one should at the very least be familiar with when first coming into Trad Craft. This book isn't perfect, and Pearson's method of Trad Craft is not really to my personal liking, but, as is stated right away in the book, ones specific way does not suddenly lay claim to be the one and only way. Anyone familiar with Trad Craft, or with Paganism at all should be aware fairly soon that the Pagan umbrella is a big umbrella indeed! Is this the best book one could find when starting out in Trad Craft, no, I personally don't think it is. But one could do far far worse as a starting point in old craft, and if you are new (especially) to this tradition, then this book will give you one solid, and effective way of working within this tradition.

It's nice.
The order of the chapters and discussed materials could be better in my opinion. And the writing style didn't really speak to me, but you can learn and use a lot of things from this book.

perfect for beginners of witchcraft
ight so i recently go into witchcraft but im not associated with Wicca just cuz of my very diversified religious beliefs, still paganism but i incorporate a lot of different deities from different cultures. this book pretty much give you an overview of traditional witchcraft with a handful of spells and recipes. learned a lot.

Love the book. But now I know I could have ordered it from England and paid much less.

A proper read, without fluff, faff or codswallop. Good.
65% very similar to my natural education from living in the country, my great nan and artistic creativity with inspiration in a "shamanic" form as I grew up. Didn't think I would find a book with some reality. 90% of the market is full of teen-glam-goth-witchy books and the same-o' same-o' books watered down from three different sources in the start of the contemporary "witch-Wicca-craft" rebirth in the public eye, which are in themselves taken from separate inspirations...... Nigel Pearson's book "Treading the Mill" wether it's a true descendant of the Old Ways or inspired new practice, it's good, it's reading as though we grew up in the same style of community. Not in the city but in a village or town in a farming community, with houses that in the late 70's still had the gas lamps with gas attached in the rooms. Lion paw cast iron bathtubs, black grate fireplaces in each room, AGA stoves, Witch Bottles under hearth and front door, shoes in walls and markings in wood. I felt we knew each other's family's with the core structure and feel, but it was missing the metaphorical books in my nan's teachings and my later education. Which is a good thing, we all have things to add to the faithful core of traditions. It's a good general core book, with no faff, no fluff, it has that connection with the past, the rough hands of crafters who 50% of their time is conservation of country, wildlife, woodlands, meadows, skills and trades. Learning dry stone walling, hedging, woodland coppicing, charcoal production and hurdling. It's an advocate of if your into the craft then it's part of the world, the countryside. It's definitely one of the books I bought when I rarely ever buy contemporary works on the subject. Worth buying. Especially if your looking for a proper foundation.

Good
Liked the latter sections best. Herbcraft bores me. Who has the Time for that stuff? Good intro to Trad Craft. It is what it is...

Not for fluffy bunnies.....
The fluffy bunnies and the crushed velvet gowns brigade aren't going to like this much. It gets really near to the genuine cunning craft (or Traditional Witchcraft, if you prefer that title) and if you actually get out there and do the work you'll find yourself much closer to experiencing the dark wildness than you might comfortably expect. The real craft is a large per cent intuitive and experimental, and a book can only give you starting points. There is a lot of information here, and you don't necessarily have to agree with all of it, but if you feel drawn to this path it's a great starting point. The author's black and white photographs are evocative and inspiring too. A nice change from the usual pretty-pretty pictures that look as if they've been posed for one of the Sunday supplements.
