Smaller than expected but arrived in a timely fashion.

Underwhelming
For every paragraph of insight there’s several pages of meandering writing lacking focus. Did I learn anything? Yes. But would I recommend the book to someone else? Sadly, no.

Best textbook I've ever been assigned
This is literally the only "textbook" (it's the size and length of a short novel) I have read cover to cover. It is written like a simple to digest non-fiction book, in a way that mirror conversational tones more than the dry, meaningless sentences of many traditional textbooks. I also learned more from this short book than I did in my other MLIS classes! Metadata is incredibly important and interesting! I ended up doing further research on the semantic web and linked data projects after reading it.

Easy read for a sometimes complex subject
Easy read for a sometimes complex subject. Great for newcomers to the metadata world. Explains all the technical stuff at a down-to-earth, relatable level. Great examples!

Good overview.
Nice general overview of the subject with reference to continue reading. Some parts could have a little bit more detail and less repetition.

Great Introduction to a Rarely-Discussed Topic (Review by Ryan Mease)
This book is precisely what it needs to be: a concise but thoughtful introduction to the use of metadata as both a historical phenomenon and modern megaphenomenon. Metadata are supremely important in the world of big data, and Pomerantz does an effective job of selling the reader on their value. He is also careful to parse a wider definition of metadata than 'phone records,' showing where it can be used in less political applications like library of congress records or book jackets. This is also a kind oblique introduction to library and information science, insofar as Pomerantz assumes no knowledge of these topics and offers the reader the basics. For anyone new to metadata, library science or information science, this is a quick, informative read that will fill in a lot of holes. I don't think these are topics most people take the time to learn about, despite their very meaty role in modern life. -Ryan Mease

Great coverage of different types of metadata
Metadata is a lesser known area of data management especially concerning formal standards. This covers different types of metadata and Pomerantz has also done online courses on this material and I am grateful to him for covering it. Very useful.

Useful overview
Metadata seems to be often used, but rarely specifically discussed and I found this book provided a useful structural overview to the field and it’s concepts.

Comprehensive introduction
Good introduction to the topic. Could use a workshop chapter explaining how to put all the ideas together to achieve something useful
