As Sarah Sargent writes in the exhibition catalogue "Passages": Hathaway's flowers are extravagant, exuberant creations. She layers paint on, building up texture and pushing color to extremes in terms of vividness and juxtapositions... In areas, her imagery dissolves into expressive brushstrokes that thrum with energy, becoming more about paint and gesture than representation. She will often return to the same composition again and again, varying color or emphasis to discover different outcomes that can be achieved from the same starting point.
